Item Adeem Suhail Interview(Hindi-Urdu Flagship) Hindi-Urdu FlagshipItem An Ethical Evaluation of Offshore Finance in the Cayman Islands(2021-05) Green, James A.The conception of the Cayman Islands as a tax-haven and safe space for unethical money launderers and tax evaders from around the world has achieved mythic status in the media of developed nations such as the United States of America, the United Kingdom, and the member states of the European Union. Meanwhile, the government and financial firms of the Cayman Islands have stressed that the jurisdiction is in compliance with, or at the forefront of, every international tax code and regulatory standard. Born of this juxtaposition is my thesis question: is offshore finance in the Cayman Islands unethical? Politicians, regulators, academics, and the public have all contributed in some way or another to the discourse surrounding this question; yet, these commenters rarely display even a rudimentary understanding of how financial services function in Cayman and of Cayman as a whole. I hope this thesis draws attention to the dearth of informed discussion regarding Cayman, injects the discussion with critical cultural, historical, and economic information about Cayman, and provides useful critiques of the ethical arguments for and against the jurisdiction. This thesis also shines a light on the bigoted, neocolonial, and prejudiced language which pollutes many discussions regarding the ethics of Cayman. This language may be partially responsible for the uninformed academic, and public discussions about Cayman and the regulation efforts to restrain the jurisdiction.Item The Challenges of Globalization: An Interview with Ernesto Zedillo(Teresa Lozano Long Institute of Latin American Studies, 2009) Lindsay, James M.Item Composite Culture and Cosmopolitanism in Manzoor Ehtesham's Sukha Bargad, Arvind Adiga's White Tiger, and Slumdog Millionaire(Hindi Urdu Flagship, 2010-04-10) Hansen, KathrynItem Correspondence: Fixing the Current System or Moving Toward a Value-Based Globalization? The problem of state autonomy becomes more acute for developing countries attempting to construct or defend rights-based social programs in the face of powerful transnational corporations, foreign diplomatic pressures and new international government organizations such as the World Trade Organization (WTO). A case study of the impact the Agreement on Trade-Related Intellectual Property System (TRIPS) on Brazil’s universal AIDS treatment program is employed to assess the various theories of globalization and state autonomy. The study reveals that, although TRIPS represents a qualitative shift in power in favor of transnational companies, centralization of power at the global level can lead to the development of domestic coalitions in defense of national projects. More importantly, when contesting powerful adversaries, state actors may increase their leverage by projecting symbolic power to a global audience. The concept of reputational dividends is developed in this paper to emphasize that as nation-states become increasingly integrated into a global social system, the symbolic dimension of power becomes more salient in forging state autonomy.Item Girl Branded: Nike, the UN and the Construction of the Entrepreneurial Adolescent Girl Subject(The Bernard and Audre Rapoport Center for Human Rights and Justice, 2015) Hengeveld, MariaWith the rise of corporate social responsibility (CSR) and philanthro-capitalism since the early 2000s, transnational corporations (TNCs) have come to play a prominent role in international policy debates on sustainable development and human rights. A key feature of the growing corporate interest in poverty reduction is its faith in feminist ideas as tools for change. Spearheaded by the ‘Girl Effect’ campaign of athletic apparel giant Nike (since 2008), development institutions and aid agencies have largely embraced the idea that ‘rebranding girls’ in the Global South as untapped market potential and training them as self-confident, entrepreneurial market actors represents the key to solving poverty. In an attempt to gauge the growing influence of TNCs on development policy, this article analyzes the principles and the actual effects of the Girl Effect and compares it with Nike’s own interests as a corporation built on women’s labor. It argues that contrary to freeing girls’ potential, the Girl Effect project capitalizes on patriarchy to depoliticize poverty and inequality. Far from empowering women or supporting the poor, Nike’s rebranding project is an attempt to discipline girls, and the NGOs that represent them, into behaviors that support the status quo, distract from corporations’ misbehavior and expand the power of the market.Item Globalizing Texas: Exports and High-Tech Jobs(Bureau of Business Research, The University of Texas at Austin, 2009-06) Kumar, AnilAmong the U.S. states, Texas has been at the forefront of globalization, which is characterized by the international flow not only of goods and services but also human and financial capital. A key factor in these high marks for globalization has been expanding trade, which has made Texas the top exporting state. Compared with the nation, Texas exports a larger share of its output. Through state-level export data, the welfare of Texas and other states in a more open world economy can be observed.Item Government Activity to Increase Benefits from the Global Standards System(IEEE, 2001-10) Marks, R.B.; Hebner, R.E.In this paper, we review the factors influencing the evolution of the global standards system. We then discuss some of the approaches that governments have taken or are exploring in order to modify the system for the benefit of domestic and worldwide economic development. We use as an example an effort of the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology to encourage voluntary consensus standards for interoperable broadband wireless access systemsItem Identity Crisis: The Post-WWII Reconstruction of the City of London(2017-03) Dolan, AlexandraItem Maritime Transportation in Latin America and the Caribbean, PRP 138(LBJ School of Public Affairs, 2001) Boske, Leigh B.Item Shilpa Parnami Interview(Hindi-Urdu Flagship) Hindi-Urdu FlagshipItem The Future of Speech: What the Rise of China Portends for Democracy In the Digital Age(2021-05) Yu, DerekDuring the protests in Hong Kong a few summers ago, celebrities on both sides of the debate aired their opinions on the matter at hand. One such celebrity was Daryl Morey-- the general manager for the Houston Rockets. In a controversial tweet, he posted his support of the pro-democracy movement in the former British colony. Backlash quickly ensued. Global online outrage directed at one individual airing his opinion on political matters on another continent underscores how interconnected the world has become. Social media has democratized important conversations but it also acts as a megaphone and as a tool that can be manipulated by unfavorable actors. At the heart of this incident is China's undemocratic government and its attitude toward dissent. In this case the dissident in question was not Chinese at all, but he faced backlash nonetheless. Such is the growing influence of China in global affairs. As more of the world goes online and China's global influence grows, what does this portend for the future of speech around the world?Item Vol. 5, Iss. 1: Engines of Statecraft (Winter 2021/2022)(Texas National Security Review, 2022) Texas National Security ReviewItem Vol. 5, Iss. 4: Stressing the System (Fall 2022)(Texas National Security Review, 2022) Texas National Security ReviewItem The West and the Rest: Globalization and the Terrorist Threat(2008-10-21) Scruton, Roger
