Auto X is a short fiction film about the ramblings, arguments, and strange encounters in a day in the life of a south-side Austin auto body & tint shop. It was devised and developed through improvisation and collaboration between its four-person cast and the director. Incorporating both elements of realism, character-driven fiction, and documentary, Auto X utilizes an unconventional approach to narrative filmmaking to present a unique and textured world of characters. The report recounts the production process in a day-by-day first-person narrative. The production account is preceded by a description of the initial planning and conceptualization of the project. In the latter half, the post-production process is presented as well as final conclusions drawn from the entire life of the project. Particular attention is paid to key filmmaking concepts and stylistic approaches that are discussed alongside the stages of production they pertain to.Item The delights and dangers of ambiguity(2013-05) Modi, Anand J.; Schiesari, NancyThe following report describes the conception, pre-production, production, and post-production of my short-narrative thesis film. The film portrays a night in the life of three characters: a woman, her husband, and the limousine driver ferrying them around town. The film reveals the complex and ambiguous history that the characters share while exploring the intersections of dreams and memories. The film is based on several true stories told by a Diane Hill James, who grew up in Smithville, Texas during the 1950s. The script weaves together Ms. James’s experiences growing up near the famous Texas brothel, The Chicken Ranch, located in the neighboring town of La Grange. Diane and her friends would frequently spy on the brothel and once a stranger, new to town, mistook her family home as the brothel and her as a prostitute. The film, Just us Chickens, considers how these experiences could inform and influence the sexual identity of a young woman, and aims to clarify the contradictory expectations put upon female sexual development both then and now.Item Leaves on trees(2014-05) Duncan, Nathan Scot; Raval, P. The report contains a deep discussion of the origin of the story, the writing process and the rationale behind the director’s artistic choices for the film.Item The toothbrush : the process for producing a film(2018-06-26) McCleary, Mercedes; Habeck, Michelle M.; Mickey, Susan E.This thesis documents the production process for which to develop, direct, design, and film a staged narrative work translated and inspired by the Argentinian born playwright Jorge Diaz’s El Cepillo de Dientes, The Toothbrush, an absurd and dark comedic stage play. The thesis draws comparisons between the research, preparation, and production process for live theatre and for filmed narrative works. The thesis will discuss the way in which one prepares, constructs, modifies, and applies storytelling structure, concepts of time, visual composition, and stylistic point of view to a work in the two fields. The thesis will examine the roles, skills, and knowledge necessary to successfully execute and complete a project of this type. The thesis examines variations in the research and preparation processes necessary to each medium, live stage and film. The paper will make clear the breath of roles I had to undertake to complete the project which include translator, screenwriter, producer, director, cinematographer, production designer and video editor.
