Abstract
This thesis combines elements of industrial and textual analysis along with reception studies to explore how children from Tabasco, Mexico, perceive cultural specificity in the American animated series Dexter’s Laboratory. The basic objective is to study the ways in which an American text distributed internationally is perceived by a local audience, particularly by one that is in the process of construction of its cultural identity. The results present a complex picture of the reception moment, showing that children apply diverse strategies to make sense of culturally distant references in the cartoon. Issues of cultural adaptation and international trade of animation are also addressed
