Abstract

An examination of the lighting requirements of mid- to large-scale building projects, with a focus on the utilization of natural daylight. The paper considers the sorts of tasks to be performed in different rooms/sections of the building, as well as psychological and biological effects, and discusses strategies for optimizing natural light conditions. Five projects are given as case studies: the Arup Campus in Solihull, England (Arup); World's End School (Architects' Co-Partnership); the Administration Building in Wiesbaden, Germany (Herzog + Partner); the Nasher Gallery in Dallas, TX (Renzo Piano); and the Chelsea Club in London, England (Fletcher Priest).
