From the time that I first read extensively in the theater of Jacinto Benavente this author has particularly appealed to me in the sweep of his works, the multiplicity of his themes and the variety of his forms and treatments. No previous study has been made of the purely technical aspects of his plays although there has been a great deal written on individual plays as well as concerning the subject matter, satire and treatment of women. This study has been limited to the technique of the author, although it has gone at times beyond the strictly mechanical features to include symbolism, psychological problems and the interés motif
