Description
This study has been the result of a suggestion made by Dr. E.C. Barker while lecturing to one of his classes in American History. Much has been written on sectionalism in the South during the three quarters of a century preceding the Civil War, but relatively little has been published on New England sectionalism. Likewise, a great deal has been written on New England opposition to westward expansion only in so far as it was connected with the purchase of Louisiana, the annexation of Texas, and the purchase of the American Southwest at the conclusion of the Mexican War. In fact, this attitude toward westward expansion is evident from the beginning of New England and has been continuous. In the main the sources used in this study have been books, letters, articles, and other materials written by New Englanders and others of the period in which they live.
