"In this study I examine three fairy tale authors, Giambattista Basile, Charles Perrault, and Jacob and William Grimm, and their versions of five fairy tales. These stories are known in English as "Cinderella," "Donkey-Skin," "The Fairies," "Sleeping Beauty," and "Hansel and Gretel." This paper demonstrates the similarities and dissimilarities between the versions in regard to such aspects as story line, sexuality, the supernatural, characterization and tone. The changes that each author imposed on his stories are a result of his target readership. For Basile, this readership was comprised of adults at the Neapolitan Court; for Perrault, adults and young women of the nobility and aristocracy; for the Grimms, children of bourgeois households"--Page iv.
