Item Control of Track Morphology in Digital Glass Forming(University of Texas at Austin, 2023) Capps, Nicholas; Goldstein, Jonathan; Landers, Robert; Kinzel, EdwardDigital Glass Forming involves locally heating a glass filament using a laser while continuously feeding relative to the workpiece. This enables precise control of the viscosity of the molten region. This viscous melt pool is deformed by forces from the filament and workpiece. This paper investigates the relationships between the input parameters, laser power, feed rate, and scan speed, with the resulting track morphology. Tracks are used to build larger, more complex structures. By underfeeding the filament relative to the able scan speed, the glass is locally drawn to produce tracks with significantly smaller cross-sectional areas than the feedstock material. This technique allows for the production of arbitrary geometries and surface features using a smaller equivalent diameter than the input feedstock. The paper explores the available process zone for this underfed deposition mode and the limitations of this method.Item Damage Evolution In Ballistic Impact Of Glass Plates(2009-12) Bless, S. J.; Russell, R.; Berry, D. T.; Levinson, S.; Bless, S. J.; Russell, R.; Berry, D. T.; Levinson, S.High-velocity impact onto a layered glass target produces a very extensive damage pattern exhibiting many distinct morphologies. High-speed photography reveals failure waves and cracks that move at acoustic velocities. These prompt features evolve into a complex final damage pattern that includes needle fragments around the penetration cavity, radial cracks at mid distance, and dicing cracks near the edges.Item Empowering Women: Policy to Chip Away at Money’s Glass Ceiling(2018-11-30) Ancheta, Jason Eric A.Item Impact Strength Of Glass And Glass Ceramic(2009-12) Bless, S.; Tolman, J.; Bless, S.; Tolman, J.Strength of glass and glass ceramic was measured with a bar impact technique. High-speed movies show regions of tensile and compressive failure. The borosilicatc glass had a compressive strength of at least 2.2 GPa, and the glass ceramic at least 4 GPa. However, the BSG was much stronger in tension than GC. In ballistic tests, the BSG was the superior armor.Item Improved Bar Impact Tests Using A Photonic Doppler Velocimeter(2009-12) Bless, S. J.; Tolman, J.; Levinson, S.; Nguyen, J.; Bless, S. J.; Tolman, J.; Levinson, S.Bar impact tests, using the techniques described elsewhere in this symposium, were used to measure compressive and tensile strengths of borosilicate glass, soda lime glass, and a glass ceramic. The glass ceramic was 25% crystalline spinel, furnished by Corning Inc. There are two measures of compressive strength: the peak stress that can be transmitted in unconfined compression, and the >steady state> strength. For borosilicate glass and soda lime glass, these values were similar, being about 1.8 and 1.5 GPa, respectively. The glass ceramic (25% spinel) was almost 50% stronger. Tensile failure in the glass and glass ceramic takes places via surface flaws, and thus tensile strength is an extrinsic, as opposed to intrinsic property.Item Letter to B.L. Ryan from Thomas L. An opening reception was held at the FAL on Friday, October 7, from 5:00- 8:00p.m. The exhibit is a cooperative venture of the FAL with a group of local small-firm architects as part of the Austin x Design month-long celebration of design in the built and natural worlds. It provides the architecture and design community an opportunity to show off its artistic side, and for artists to exhibit their site-specific works in photographic form. Artists participating in the show included: Lisa Orr, designer of the Deep Eddy mural; Sculptor Lars Stanley; Artist Tim Kerr; and designer Davey McEathron of ¡El Grupo! and the moustache ride at El Chilito. The exhibit includes 40 works from over 20 designers and artists, featuring sculpture, a house model, photographs, furniture, glass, paintings, and decorative pieces.
