Item Aristophanes' Critique of the Gods(2011-03-25) Ambler, WayneItem Bodies Bodies Bodies: How to Poke Fun at a Generation(ORANGE Magazine, 2022-11-01) Meier, SydneyItem From Print To Screen: Asian American Romantic Comedies And Sociopolitical Influences(2019-05-01) Yu, Karena; Mallapragada, MadhaviIn this thesis, I examine how sociopolitical contexts and production cultures have affected how original Asian American narrative texts have been adapted into mainstream romantic comedies. I begin by defining several terms used throughout my thesis: race, ethnicity, Asian American, and humor/comedy. Then, I give a history of Asian American media portrayals, as these earlier images have profoundly affected the ways in which Asian Americans are seen in media today. Finally, I compare the adaptation of humor in two case studies, Flower Drum Song (1961) which was created by Rodgers and Hammerstein, and Crazy Rich Asians (2018) which was directed by Jon M. Chu. From this analysis, I argue that both seek to undercut the perpetual foreigner myth, but the difference in sociocultural incentives and control of production have resulted in more nuanced portrayals of some Asian Americans in the latter case. However, its tendency to push towards the mainstream has limited its ability to challenge stereotyped representations, and it continues to privilege an Americentric perspective.Item How to BBQ a comedy the UT way: the writing of Club Fed(2009-08) Pinkerton, Kevin Jeffrey; Kelban, Stuart; Lewis, Richard M.In this thesis report I describe in detail the conception of a fictional story set in present-day Florida and the Caribbean and its development as a screenplay, the University of Texas Graduate School learning environment that facilitated this writing exercise, and my reflections on the MFA process as a whole.Item Joke'S On You: An Exploration Of America'S Comedy Landscape(2019-05-01) Hsieh, Bianca J.; Fuller-Seely, KathrynThe creative thesis, “Joke’s on You: An Exploration of America’s Comedy Landscape” is a foray into the American comedic field, with a particular focus on stand-up comedy. The thesis is two-fold, consisting of a creative component and an academic component. The creative component consists of 15 minutes worth of material, ranging across a myriad of topics from Asian stereotypes to family quirks to personal upbringing. The humor used is a combination of observational and self-deprecating humor. Finally, the creative component is broken up into four sets: one filmed in front of friends, one filmed in front of an organization, one filmed at an audition for The University of Texas at Austin’s largest talent show, Texas Revue, and one at an open mic. Conversely, the academic component details and develops the history of comedy and types of humor before delving into challenges faced during the personal journey and writing of the creative component. The academic treatise concludes with an analysis of the landscape at large.Item Language and power in Roman comedy(2009-05) Rich, Laura Brooke; Moore, Timothy J., 1959-; Riggsby, Andrew M.The theory of powerless speech suggests that speakers in powerless social positions use more “powerless” speech acts than their social superiors. This report will use two such powerless speech acts, hedges and tag questions, to examine the interplay between the power relationships of Roman comedy and the language of its characters. The results of this study show that Republican Latin does not always follow the theory’s predictions, suggesting that hedges and tag questions may not be powerless speech acts in Latin; that the theory may need to be modified in order to accommodate Latin; or that the Saturnalian nature of Roman comedy prevents the expected outcome of powerless language.Item Le Legataire Universel(University of Texas at Austin, 1912-12-15) Regnard, Jean FrancoisItem The LIBERATOR Archive, April 2018(University of Texas at Austin, 2018-04) University of Texas at AustinItem The LIBERATOR, Issue 3(University of Texas at Austin, 2012-02-27) University of Texas at Austin; Montemayor, Marisa; Smith, Cheyenne
