Item Supercritical Water Oxidation of Acetic Acid Catalyzed by CeO2/MnO2(University of Texas at Austin, 1992-09) Frisch, M.A.; Gloyna, E.F.Item Synthesis and Stabilization of Platinum Nanocubes in an Aqueous Environment for Utilization in DNA Biosensor Device(2015-05) Kusmierz, CarolinePt nanoparticles (NPs) are well-known for their exceptional catalytic properties towards a variety of heterogeneous reactions. Colloidal Pt NPs have therefore been investigated to act as reporters for ultrasensitive biosensing methods based on electrocatalytic amplification of hydrazine oxidation. But in order to elucidate the various complex processes that occur in such systems on the single NP level, efforts have been made to design a model system in which the Pt NPs analyzed are of uniform size/shape and maintain their colloidal stability under the experimental conditions. Towards this goal, we have investigated different methods for synthesizing platinum NPs with control over the size and morphology, primarily focusing on cube-shape Pt NPs. Additionally different ligand exchange techniques have been tested to improve nanoparticle stability in an aqueous environment. Finally the synthesis of Au-Fe304 heterodimers for an improved biosensor scheme is described and the preliminary results are shown.
