Item An evaluation of the Emerging Scholars Program at the University of Texas at Austin : a non-remedial approach to the advancement of minority students and women in mathematics(1993) Clubine, Betsy Jean, 1964-; Selby, Henry A.In 1988, the School of Natural Sciences at the University of Texas initiated the Emerging Scholars Program (ESP), a non-remedial approach to the advancement of underrepresented minority students and women in mathematics and math-related fields of interest. This report presents three major findings of a 1990-91 evaluation of ESP: 1) participation in ESP has a marked effect on student performance in freshman calculus regardless of incoming SAT scores and instructor; 2) ESP provides a focus for development of social and intellectual ties with other students, graduate assistants and program personnel; and 3) the subjective quality of the ESP classroom, including instructor expectations, group dynamics and level of academic intensity, is essential to the success of the program. Recommendations for future research and program development are included
