Item Negative concord in Romanian(2004-12-18) Teodorescu, Viorica Alexandra; Bhatt, Rajesh, 1973-; Schwarz, BernhardThe phenomenon of negative concord has received much attention in the literature, especially from the perspective of Romance languages. This study contributes to the ongoing debate by presenting and analyzing novel data from Romanian. Romanian negative concord differs from all types of negative concord previously described. In finite clauses it resembles Polish and Russian, while in non-finite clauses it is much like Spanish and Italian. Nevertheless, the similarity with the Spanish and Italian data is only partial. I propose an analysis of this pattern which posits a silent negation and treats all morphologically negative noun phrases and adverbs as existential quantifiers. Moreover, it is shown that the licensing relation between the silent negation and these expressions is subject to locality constraints and that the so called double negation reading involves partial reconstruction. The licensing and interpretation contrast between finite and non-finite clauses relates to a verb movement asymmetry
