Item Initial Report on the Geology of the Northeastern Part of the New Braunfels, Texas(1991) Raney, J. A.; Baumgardner, Jr., Robert W.; Collins, Edward W.; Wermund, E. G.This brief report describes initial progress on geologic mapping and paleontologic studies that are being conducted in the vicinity of New Braunfels, Texas. The primary objective of this work is to produce an accurate geologic map that will be printed on the new 1:100,000-scale map of the New Braunfels, Texas, 30 X 60 minute quadrangle, which is in preparation by the U.S. Geological Survey. A planimetric version has been printed, but the final topographic map is not yet available. Our initial mapping has been completed on 1:24,000-scale topographic maps and is intended for compilation at 1:100,000-scale. Partial funding for the second year of the study has been approved. Work during year two will continue the mapping into quadrangles adjacent to those mapped in year one. Paleontologic work by Dr. Will Elder will continue as part of the in-kind contribution by the U.S. Geological Survey to this effort. Dr. E. G. Wermund has described this project to several groups for whom the geology of this area is of interest. Draft copies of the mapping accomplished to date have been given to the Edwards Underground Water District, potentially for entry by them into a GIS, and copies will be made available to other interested parties as requested. In addition, the South Texas Geological Society has passed a resolution commending this initiative, supporting this new mapping effort, and offering the help of their membership.Item Letter to B.Coleman Renick from Henryk B. L. (Sirkka L.); Wong, Patrick, 1956-; Evans, AngelaMany municipalities are deciding how to engage their citizens through social media while, at the same time, the universe of social media applications continues to grow and evolve. As of May 2011, the government of the City of New Braunfels, Texas, is not using centralized social media to interact with its constituents. This report considers whether or not social media tools are appropriate to help the city reach three identified service goals: 1) strengthening emergency management and communications services; 2) providing the capability to serve as a direct-to-citizen news entity instead of relying on traditional media for messaging; and 3) increasing public participation and engagement. Possible options and unresolved issues associated with each goal are presented. The community demographic profile of New Braunfels, the city’s status as a small urban community, and citizen access to high-speed Internet service increases the likelihood that residents will be online and engaged with social media on a regular basis. Data regarding the ownership of mobile phones and the use of these devices to connect to the Internet, combined with growing interest in social media, supports the exploration of social media for crisis communications. Three types of social media applications (microblogs/status-sharing applications, public alert applications, and blogs) present possible options for the use of social media to support emergency communications. Existing patterns of local press coverage provide the city with the possible motivation to innovate its message delivery. Possible options that could facilitate the city’s engagement of social media for messaging include hiring a public information officer, conducting an audit of the city’s brand identity online, and examining social media applications used by the city’s market comparators, including micromedia, photo and video sharing, and blogs. While data is limited with respect to existing levels of civic engagement, establishing social media policies and metrics capable of adapting to changing technologies could provide city administrators with a reasonable perspective on the value of social media for improving public engagement and participation.Item Summary Report for the New Braunfels, Texas, STATEMAP Project, 1995(1995) Collins, Edward W.; Raney, J. A.Geologic mapping of the 7.5-minute quadrangles that make up the 1:100,000-scale New Braunfels, Texas, sheet (figs. 1 and 2) has continued as scheduled during 1994-1995. Ten quadrangles (Van Raub, Helotes, Waring, Ranger Creek, Jack Mountain, San Geronimo, Comfort, Turkey Knob, Pipe Creek, and Medina Lake) were mapped during this time (fig. 2). During the 1994-1995 contract year, we completed mapping for the 1:100,000-scale New Braunfels, Texas, sheet, an area that contains 32 7.5-minute quadrangles. We anticipate the color 1:100,000-scale geologic map and its text will be published during 1996 as scheduled. This project has succeeded in making useful geologic information for a geologically critical part of Texas available to the public. Thirty-two open-file geologic maps, at 1:24,000 scale, are available, and studies related to the mapping contributed to three published papers (Collins, 1993; Collins, 1994; Collins, in press).
