Item Deception detection techniques in the client-therapist relationship from the perspective of a marriage and family therapist(2005-04-21) Alford, Allison M.; Vangelisti, Anita L.This study investigated deception in the therapeutic session based on interviews with marriage and family therapists. The participants included 30 male and female marriage and family therapists with one or more post-baccalaureate degrees. Conducting interviews using open ended questions yielded a deeper understanding of the participants’ perceptions of deception. The participants fit into three respondent categories when answering interview questions. Additionally, the research findings displayed an unwillingness on the part of the therapists to use the word “deception,” and instead a tendency to use other words that describe the same action, creating a new lexicon for this topic. Finally, a model was developed to portray the reflective process deception undergoes in the therapy setting
