Item Dearly belated : recorded concept album for mixed chamber ensemble, rock band, vocal trio, chorus, and electronics(2023-04-21) Tabata, James Takashi; Sharlat, Yevgeniy, 1977-; Thomas, Omar, 1984-; Kelly, Ryan; Trevino, Ivan; Dell'Antonio, AndrewThe boundaries between “popular” and “contemporary art” practices have steadily diminished over the past decade among classically trained composers, producing more self-performing composers and songwriters in the classical sphere. Composers such as Bryce Dessner and Moses Sumney continue to collaborate with contemporary ensembles while performing their own works, both in popular song form and influenced by sound exploration encouraged in academic and experimental institutions. Throughout my graduate studies, I have taken to writing songs in popular form in fully realized scores with detailed notation of various instruments and electronic accompaniment. These songs have been organized into a concept album called “Dearly Belated” and have been performed throughout Austin, Texas. Through writing, singing, continued performing with a band of regular members, professional studio recording, and audio mixing, I have experienced both popular and contemporary practices that have improved my logistical, pedagogical, and creative ways of making art.
