Item Reducing the uncertainty in ¹¹⁵ᵐCd gamma-ray branching ratios(2023-06-30) Gordon, Emily Margaret; Haas, Derek Anderson, 1981-; Johnson, William; Charlton, William; Landsberger, SheldonThe isotope ¹¹⁵ᵐCd is an important fission product in nuclear forensics due to its fission yield and relatively long half-life. Currently, analysis procedures for the assay of ¹¹⁵ᵐCd are limited to β⁻ detection due to high uncertainty in the gamma-ray branching ratios. To facilitate the use of gamma spectroscopy in ¹¹⁵ᵐCd analysis, the gamma-ray branching ratio data for the isotope was improved. The relevant uncertainties were reduced significantly by first producing a sample of ¹¹⁵ᵐCd , then combining gamma spectroscopy and β⁻ counting to find the gamma emission rate for a set of gamma-ray energies, and β⁻ emission rate to determine total activity. The data was then used in conjunction with a specially developed analysis procedure to yield the gamma-ray branching ratios with uncertainty ≤5%.
