Item After Paula: An Interview with Isabel Allende(1999) Rodden, JohnItem In Search of Hidden Dragons: An Exploration into Western Business Challenges in China(2020-05) Collins, QuinnChina became an attractive foreign investment destination after undergoing economic reforms in the late 1970s. Taking advantage of cheap labor and incentives offered by the Chinese government, Western companies began developing local operations that would prove to be profitable. Nevertheless, these companies can still have difficulty operating in a socialist-market economy. So what challenges might foreign companies encounter in China? This thesis answers such a question from three angles: political, cultural, and business processes. Political challenges encompass regulations and directives from the Chinese Communist Party that hamper foreign companies. Cultural challenges arise from companies’ unfamiliarity with Chinese cultural practices in business as well as with a unique consumer culture molded by novel technologies. Finally, business process challenges deal with issues that directly impact a company’s profitability, such as labor and competition.Item Potholes on China's. New Silk Road: An Analysis of Chinese Aid and Investment in South Asia(2019-12) Evans, JoshuaFor centuries, the Indian Subcontinent has played a role as a crossroads of East and West and as a geopolitical kingmaker, encouraging trade but also representing the wealthiest region ever to be conquered. In the 21st Century, the emerging global power of China has rapidly increased their aid and investment in South Asia, forging stronger economic ties with past partners and upending decades of alliances with other powers. This thesis focuses on the motivations, decisions, and outcomes of Chinese financial flows into South Asia, analyzing the degree that Chinese investment matches governmental claims of motive and how the geopolitical landscape is changing in response to Chinese money. Split into four sections, the thesis first provides justification for focus on the importance of South Asia and the unique nature of Chinese aid and investment, particularly with respect to China's One Belt, One Road Initiative. Next, the thesis overviews past literature on antecedents, decisions, and outcomes of Chinese investment, providing background to qualitative changes the tests run in this thesis. Thirdly, the thesis runs regressions and tests to provide greater clarity to the motivations behind Chinese investment. The final chapters examine case studies of the two largest recipients of Chinese investment, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, and explore how the investment patterns and political outcomes of these two countries are reflected across many recipients of Chinese money, and how these outcomes have called into question the success of the One Belt, One Road Initiative. This research relies on data collected by AidData at the College of William & Mary and the goal of this thesis is to call into question the state of literature and differing narratives regarding Chinese investment by providing quantitative evidence for or against certain claims.Item Roberto D’Aubuisson: A Right-Wing Leader’s Rise to Power(2020-12) Alvarez, DestinyThis thesis examines the wartime actions and strategies of Salvadoran General Roberto D’Aubuisson, a prominent right-wing leader during the Salvadoran Civil War. Major D’Aubuisson was accused of numerous human rights abuses both directly and indirectly through his ties with paramilitary death squads and corrupt political regimes. The purpose of this work is to analyze how D’Aubuisson was able to rise to political prominence and amass significant influence during the war despite his alleged ties to illegal activities and human rights abuses. I use this analysis to determine how D’Aubuisson’s role helped expose the weaknesses of the Salvadoran state, and what that meant for the future of the country in its post-war recovery. My primary research strategy is a qualitative analysis of historical documentation from various media outlets, such as newspapers and radio interviews, as well as U.S. and Salvadoran government archives and personal testimonials of Salvadoran citizens from the wartime period of 1979-1992. I use this data to piece together the various roles D’Aubuisson played in the Civil War and the circumstances surrounding his rise to power. By examining the personal, domestic, and global circumstances that allowed D’Aubuisson to rise to prominence El Salvador, I reveal the core issues in the country that have impacted its development.
