Item The ghosts lingering in the Río Bravo : examining erasures, sequelae, and trabajo de duelo through border women's literature and film(2023-07-31) Garcia, Ashley Nelcy; Domínguez Ruvalcaba, Héctor, 1962-; Salgado, César A; Lindstrom, Naomi; Smith, Christen AThe plot of this dissertation is to confront the silences with the mid-20th and 21st-century discourses that produced (and continue to produce) ghosts lingering in the Río Bravo. To meet the objective, I reimagine cultural texts produced by Irma Sabina Sepúlveda, Rosario Sanmiguel, Marcela Arteaga, Elpidia García Delgado, and Cecilia Ballí as ghost stories. The border women’s works were published between 1969 and 2019. The lenses I introduce to analyze the texts are” ghost work” and “trabajo de duelo.” The first concept is used to identify the silences, define who counts as a specter, and reimagine my selection of primary texts as ghosts’ stories or stories of ghosts. In this project, the specters represent people from communities bordering the Río Bravo who were not tallied or perceived as victims in the decades between the implementation of the Mexican Agrarian Reform (1917-1992) and Felipe Calderón's war on narcotrafficking (2006-2012). I specifically search for and examine the ghosts of desaparecidos(as), desplazadas, and criminalizados(as). I also coin trabajo de duelo. Readers must understand this theoretical lens as an immunizing and conscious labor that community members produce to confirm ghosts' existence and prevent their reproduction.
