Item Educational demos for resonant converter phenomena(2020-12-07) Roberts, Matthew James, M.S. in Engineering; Hanson, Alex J.Resonant topologies are often considered a versatile DC-DC topology in a power electronic engineer’s tool-set when developing DC-DC converters. Resonant converters offer high efficiency With their near-natural implementation of soft switching and ability to “absorb” the parasitics of transformers. However, designing resonant converters is a significantly more daunting task than designing traditional PWM converters; resonant topologies can come in several variations, each having different voltage gain characteristics. It is crucial when learning about more advanced converter topologies to understand the science behind how it works and the trade-offs. This work aims to share an educational tool in the form of a configurable resonant converter with instructors who wish to convey the intricacies of resonant converters to aspiring power electronic engineers. The converter, alongside the TI LAUNCHXL-F280049C and MATLAB, modulates over the switching frequency of the converter on startup to plot voltage gain versus frequency. The converter also allows manual control over switching frequency with a knob and changing design parameters through switches.
