Item La Violencia, Simacota, and the long after : an oral history of Hato, Santander(2022-05-26) Muñoz, Sebastian, M.A.; Del Castillo, Lina; Polit, GabrielaThis thesis is an Oral history of the rural community of Hato, Santander, beginning with La Violencia up until around 2002 through the narratives of six former and current community members, most of who were born prior to 1950. This thesis addresses the duality of mundanity and violence, as the interviewees navigated memories of their childhood during La Violencia, their memories of the nearby attack on Simacota on January 7, 1965, and the ramifications it had on Hato, and the long after, as the community existed in a tenebrous calm through the 60s and 70s before subsequent incursions from guerrillas and paramilitaries from the 80s until 2002. The interview’s prolonged view of Colombia’s history of the latter 20th century, plus the privileged socio-economic status of many of them, contribute to how the Colombian armed conflict can be understood and remembered, and subsequently contribute to personal narratives of contemporary Colombian politics.
