Researchers have shown that spirituality and religion can specifically provide support and dependency, coping mechanisms, anchored identity, perseverance, and resilience in the lives of African American male college students. Researchers have also indicated that a relationship exists between athletic identity and the racial identity of Black male collegiate student-athletes. Race and athletics have a potent influence on African American male identity. The inability for African American males with a high athletic identity to fulfill the athletic role related to their race can lead to psychological and social issues. Although people from different ethnical and racial backgrounds acclaim the Christian faith, other factors (e.g., class, race, and gender) can influence the way individuals internalize their religious belief. African Americans typically embrace the value of religion because of its liberating power, reliance of God, and practical principles in life. Experiences of race-related encounters for many African American males in college has caused them to search for emotional support, spiritual guidance, and meaning in life. Nevertheless, there remains a gap in existing literature on the impact of the intersectionality of race, athletics, and Christian faith on the lived experiences of Black male adolescents. Considering the complexity and intricacies of Black male adolescence, the relationships of Christian faith, sports, and race to it warrants exploration. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to gain a better understanding of how the Christian faith of adolescent Black male student-athletes affect their athletic and racial identity. The relationship between Christian faith, athletic identity, and racial identity was examined with a participant sample of Black male adolescent student athletes in high school (N = 330) who were Ages 13-18 years. The participants completed the Athletic Identity Measurement Scale, the Multidimensional Inventory of Black Identity-Teen, and the abbreviated Santa Clara Questionnaire. Additionally, a qualitative phenomenological study that was grounded by critical race theory and identity theory was used to explore the experiences of a selected group of participants. Semistructured individual and group interviews were administered to investigate the relationship of the three factors.
