Item U.S. Presidential Nominations: Primarily Flawed?(2023-05) Marchetto, LilyIn 1968, after Hubert Humphrey was nominated for President at the Democratic convention without contesting a single primary, there was an overhaul of the party nominating system for President which shifted power from the hands of party elites to party voters. Since the reforms, scholars have debated how much power elites have retained over the nominating process and in what ways the reforms have impacted candidate strategy. Ultimately, the reforms are most consequential if they have made a difference in which candidates or type of candidate wins the party nomination. For this reason, this paper examines if candidates before and after the 1968 reforms differ in terms of experience, ideology, and favorability. The Republican and Democrat nominees for President from each election from 1948 to 2020 are rated on these three variables — experience, ideology, and favorability — and the 1948-1968 candidates are compared to the candidates of 1972-2020.
