Item Constructing the framework for mentoring African American male student-athletes at predominately white institutions of higher education(2012-08) Kelly, Darren David; Dixon, Marlene A., 1970-; Hunt, Thomas M.; Green, B C.; Moore, Leonard N.; Harrison, LouisThe goal of this study was to develop a detailed understanding of the academic, athletic, and psychosocial needs and issues of African American male student-athletes attending a predominately White public flagship institution of higher education during their transitional first year and determine if, how, and who were meeting these needs. In addition to the well-known lower graduation rates and academic struggles of African American male football players, there are numerous psychosocial and cultural issues and barriers these young men face during their transition such as commitment, discrimination, and isolation (Hyatt, 2003). Mentoring has been used as a tool for developing organizational members in many different contexts and disciplines such as business (Kram, 1985), higher education (Johnson, 2007), and sport management (Jones, Harris, & Miles, 2009). Further, since African American male student-athletes have an array of academic and psychosocial needs, researchers need to look beyond the traditional model of having one primary mentor and explore the potential of a “critical mass” or network of mentors. Twelve first-year African American male student-athletes participated in semi-structured interviews at the conclusion of the first and second semesters of their first year of college. Additional key institutional stakeholders included four upperclassmen African American male student-athletes, three former African American male student-athletes and four faculty and staff members, also participated in interviews with the researcher to add further insights into the first-year experience. Results indicated that African American male student-athletes went through five major transitions: an academic transition, an athletic transition, an athlete status transition, a transition into a less diverse environment, and a transition away from home. Ideal mentors for these individuals were typically African American men who provided role modeling, promoted critical thinking through interactive dialogue, and gave advice on personal and academic issues. Mentoring networks for this population must at least include African American males from the faculty and staff at the university and professionals in the community along with older teammates. Research findings will be of interest to researchers, administrators (academic and athletic), and practitioners who desire to improve the academic, psychosocial, athletic, and overall college experience of African American male student-athletes.Item The impact of community college initiatives on black males at St. Philip's college : an evaluation of retention, completion, and student engagement efforts(2011-08) Hancock, Anthony, 1956-; Bumphus, Walter G.; Roueche, John E.; Northcutt, Norvell; Brown, Anthony L.; Contreras, AdrianaBlack males continue to struggle when faced with the challenge of seeking a college education (Cuyjet, 1997, 2006; Mincy, et al 2006; Schott, 2006). Currently, they lag behind in college and university participation as compared to other gendered groups as well as their White and Asian counterparts (Cuyjet, 2006; Bush & Bush, 2010). As with every promising Black male community college student, there are barriers to enrollment and completion, e.g., first-generation and first-time-in-college, previous high school academic and disciplinary experiences, peer pressure, family dynamics, financial considerations and social environments serving as barriers to enrollment and completion. Despite these barriers, many Black males students make it to college. However, they often have difficulty remaining in the educational system long enough to complete their certificates and/or degrees. Although, there are many quality community college and university programs designed to increase the overall success of students “prior to” and “during” enrollment, regrettably, many colleges that facilitate outreach and retention efforts do little by way of accountability. Statistical monitoring for evaluation purpose is mixed. Adequate records of how Black males are performing in and apart from college are important for educational institutions as they consider developing specialized programs for minority sub-group participation, engagement, and success. Furthermore, unengaged Black males, and those attempting to aid them, have varying viewpoints as to the type and priority of programs designed to include Black male participation in postsecondary education. This study will examine Black males’ perspectives versus institutional engagement strategies relative to participation, engagement, and successes that influence Black males Men on the Move program at St. Philip’s College. Moreover, the study will furthermore investigate outreach and retention efforts for Black males that were developed by the St. Philip’s College.Item Insurmountable barrier or navigable obstacle? Gender differences in the construal of academia(2010-08) Jones, Sadé Margie; Swann, William B.; Bigler, RebeccaPsychologists have begun to examine factors that influence the achievement gap between African American and White students. This is a pressing issue especially for African American students (Steele, 1997; Shelton & Sellers, 2000; Cokley, 2001). To better understand the effects of race and gender on perceived discrimination and academic disengagement, 81 African American students at the University of Texas at Austin were randomly assigned to one of three conditions. Participants either listed ten instances of discrimination they have experienced, five academic successes and five academic failures, or made no lists. The impact of these manipulations on responses to the Disengagement Scale (Major & Schmader, 1998) and the Everyday Discrimination Scale (Williams, Yu, Jackson, & Anderson, 1997) were assessed. Results suggest that gender plays an important role in African American students’ academic function. More specifically, African American males perceive more discrimination in academia than African American females, which is related to higher levels of disengagement. Researchers suggest this difference is related to African American males’ socialization to see discrimination as an insurmountable barrier rather than a navigable obstacle.Item Perceived experiences that positively contribute to high-achieving African American male student success at a large urban community college(2017-09-28) Grays, Shantay Renee; Cantu, Norma V., 1954-; Saenz, Victor B; Ovando, Martha N; Reddick, Richard JPerceived Experiences That Positively Contribute to High-Achieving African American Male Student Success at a Large Urban Community College Shantay R. Cantu Over the past two decades there have been increasing concerns about the steady decline in higher education attainment levels of African American males. There is extant literature that on African American male academic achievement and success in four-year institutions from a deficit model perspective. There is little research on high-achieving African American male students, specifically in community colleges. This study examined the lived experiences of six high-achieving African American male students enrolled in a large urban community college. The research study brings to light the perspectives of academically successful young men as well as their interpretations and understandings of how their lived experiences contributed to their academic development and success. This qualitative study responded to the following research questions: (1) What secondary school experiences do high-achieving African American males perceived as contributing to their academic success? (2) What personal experiences do high-achieving African American males perceive as contributing to their academic success in a large urban community college? (3) What institutional programs or services do high-achieving African American males perceive as contributing to their academic success in a large urban community college? The participants were 6 high-achieving African American and Black males attending a large urban community college located in in the Texas Gulf Coast region. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews. The analysis of the data yielded ten major themes (1) College Preparation, (2) High School Peer Influence, (3) Extracurricular Activity Participation, (4) Self-Motivation, (5) Family Interactions, (6) Adjustment to College, (7) Engagement, (8) Participation in Student Organizations, (9) Leadership Development Programs, and (10) Academic Support Services. The information gleaned from this study may contribute to the scarce body of knowledge that examined factors that contribute to the academic success for high-achieving African American men in a community college.Item The school to prison pipeline and the voices of formerly incarcerated African American males(2013-05) Robinson, Courtney Sherman; Foster, Kevin Michael, 1969-The school to prison pipeline is a phrase used to describe the phenomenon where youth, and disproportionately African American males, are pushed out of public school systems into criminal justice systems. It hints at the possibility that incarceration is not a matter of chance, but often a structurally created and supported outcome. In order to understand the men most disproportionately impacted by the phenomena this study explores the narratives of twelve formerly incarcerated African American men. Structural racism, challenges of school integrations and criminal justice policies emerge as powerful influences on the life outcomes of formerly incarcerated African American men. This study goes beyond statistical accounts of racial disproportionality in the criminal justice system to deeply consider the voices of generations of formerly incarcerated African American men. Understanding the impact of the school and justice systems on the lives of African American men has implications for educators and policy makers.Item Self-determination in context : an examination of factors that influence school performance among African American males in high school(2008-05) Davis, Leroy, 1968-; Yates, James R.The purpose of this study was to examine self-determination and achievement motivation as predictors of successful school performance for high school African American males enrolled in an urban Texas school district. The students (N = 108) were placed into two distinct groups: higher-performing and lower-performing African American males based upon the following: (a) Numerical average in core classes taken, (b) performance on the Texas state achievement test, (c) placement in academic classes and programs, and (d) attendance and discipline records. This study employed both qualitative and quantitative methodologies in which African American males responded to The Needs Satisfaction Scale (Ilardi, Leone, Kasser, & Ryan, 1993; Deci & Ryan, 2000; Gagne, 2003) and The Student Opinion Survey/Education Survey (Murdock, 1993). Tests of multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) were used in this study to measure the mean differences between the two groups in terms of self-determination (autonomy, relatedness, and competence); and achievement motivation (personal motivation, parent encouragement, teacher support, and peer support). The study found statistically significant differences in levels of self-determination and achievement motivation between the two groups. The qualitative segment was used to explore factors that lead to successful school performance for the African American males included in this study. Four themes emerged: (a) parental encouragement and expectations, (b) involvement in extracurricular activities, (c) personal motivation to achieve, and (d) relationships with significant adults. Recommendations are made to replicate this study in school with larger African American student enrollment and in schools with high achievement and high economic levels. Also, the study may be replicated with other ethnic groups who historically have experienced poor school performance.
