On the co n tra ry , the Fascists who write the paper think substantially the same way as the Fascists who control the press, and the result is a chorus of p ropaganda which by reason of its absolute monopoly has acquired a hypnotic e f f e c t upon the whole nation. Suppose every day for ten years a citizen read, in every new spaper he could lay his hands on, “ Black is white.” At the same tim e d u r ­ ing those te n years every radio loud-speaker in the land has re­ peated endlessly “ Black is white.” Suppose his children came home day saying every from school “ Papa, is white.” Finally, suppose it were a “ black is white.” A fte r ten years of it the sanest man would begin to say to himself “ T here must be som ething in this business of black being white.
