Most certainly, t h e r e are French students who would do full justice to such an image. But anyone placing faith in the belief that all French students, or even U e majority, fall in this category', has not the French student of the sixties. s e e n NO LONER The contemporary F r e n c h youth might be a dedicated stu­ dent, but he's not likely to be the kind who Isolates himself f o r serious coneemtration. To begin with, crowded conditions in the universities and related fa­ cilities create close.quarter sit­ uations which make isolation al­ most Impossible. It well may be pushing the students to a group conformity v astlv different from the independence of free-willed their predecessors. It Is hard for a student to maintain Individualism when he Is one of the mass who must arrive early or push hard to beat fellow students Into the classroom or the student res­ taurant. A student Is considered lucky if he is able to find a spot for himself with the multitude* in the m assive "Cite Universitaire” housing units. In fact, students are clamoring for more of these large-scale dormitories facilities that may It Is this clamor for more stu­ show dent whether the students are still a potent pressure in French poli­ tics. Turning their attention away from the Algerian p r o b l e m , which has dominated s t u d e n t group action in the past f e w years, the students are now using their ingenuity to push for im­ provement of their own situa­ tion. STRIKES HELD Already this year, students and teachers in most of the French universities h a \e h e l d 24-hour strikes to dramatize their cause. In 1961 he obtained a doctor of philosophy degree a t Cam bridge for a thesis on inform ation re trie ­ val, classification and grouping. Miss Jones received her bache­ lor's degree in history and a m as­ ter of a rts degree from Girton College, Cam bridge U niversity in 1953 and is now reading for her in doctor of philosophy degree Moral Science, her dissertation topic being “ Logical Syntax from an E m pirical Point-of-View."
