Yielding to strong pressure from the state Senate, Governor Johnston M urray Tuesday signed the controversial anti communist oath bill into law. Murray and the House had earlier asked that the measure be recalled on the grounds that certain portions were unconstitutional. The Senate, however, demanded quick action and Murray hesi tantly affixed his signature. The bill requires all state, county, and city employes to sign oaths that they are not members of the Communist party. It further requires these sworn statements: that they have not been members during the past five years of any organization listed as subversive by the U.S. AttorneyGeneral. and that they will bear arms in defense of the United States if necessary. Murray had objected to the arms-bearing provision and the section on member ship in subversive groups. His com plaints resulted from protests by Univer sity of Oklahoma officials. The educators claimed unfair tactics, pointing out that the two debatable pro visions had been added by the legislature a fte r an earlier version without them had been passed around and approved on the campus at Norman. During the harsh Senate debates pre ceding Murray’s signing, that body passed a resolution commending R. T. S tuart (Oklahoma A&M regent) because he advocated firing anyone who wouldn't sign the oath. The resolution had a rider stating that the bill not be reconsidered. And it was not reconsidered, although a comparatively small group of Okla homans wanted the pesky bill passed to begin with. Meanwhile many OU professors took the m atter as a personal insult. One e s t c t u n long-time faculty member, promising a quick court test, stated that fast legal action would prevent the state from fir ing anyone who refuses to sign the oath.
