FOSTERING TRADITION. In Dr. Vinson’s statem e n t con cerning the Cactus there appears this expression, “We must en deavor to preserve the best tra ditions of the U niversity.’’ Thus <»ne of our duties as a student body is clearly defined and set out for inspection. Do we in Dnd to shirk it? cold-blooded, Dean IL Y. Benedict is a firm believer in the same principle. He does not advocate the plan of m anufacturing traditions in a business-like manner, but he does think that when embryo traditions appear they should he nourished and cared for. His plan is to save every-day student thou g ht and deed so th a t a connecting link will not he missing when some movement or some idea bursts fo rth and establishes a tangible “ tra d itio n ” which is preserved in subsequent sessions. Dean Benedict has done all in his power to save what he con siders “source m aterial” for fu ture history w riters. He has all the old numbers of the Cactus, has football programs, letters of various descriptions, circulars, s tu d e n t newspaper files, and many oth er articles of value th a t have a direct hearing on Varsity life. And he h asn ’t ceased working on his pet project. Hut the size of th e University has handicapped him considera bly.
