.... • THE WHITE HOUSE WASHINGTON June 16, 1964 MEMORANDUM FOR MR. BUNDY: Through a very reliable but rather mysterious source, I have been informed that the Ambassador of Czechoslovakia would like President Johnson to know that the President of Czechoslovakia would be most pleased to accept an invitation to visit the United States any time before the election or after it. He pointed out that they, the Czechoslovakians, can make no overture of any kind officially, but if he is asked, the Ambassador will assure the President or the Secretary of State that his president can come and will come for informal discussions. Furthermore, either before or after the visit, Czechoslovakians are eager to send a Czech trade ission to the United States to discuss any kind of opening in trade arrangements with Western nations and especially the United States. I do not know whether this has ever been proposed o ficially or unofficially, but I can assure you that if we raise the question they will accept the invitation.
