J. FISHER No nation in history has shown such generosity toward the stran ge as has the United States. Hospitality, reverence for independence, federalism, and a disrespect for authority have made the US distinctive. Dr. Felix S. Cohen, noted lawyer, philosopher, and educater gave the final Great Issues lecture of the semester Wednesday on “Ethics of Our Foreign Policy.” During the last 150 years our open door policy has served to democratize not only the im migrants but also their families and friends to whom they wrote about America. In the US a man was measured by his contribution, not by his birth or wealth. This open door policy was eventually closed in the faces o f the Chinese and .Japanese. The ideal free trade has collapsed, said Dr. Cohen. Faith in the free inter-change o f peoples and ideas have changed in the last 30 years, “ We bolt the doors and windows like hysterical children hand have almost closed the door that once was a sym bol/' he said. He cited the American open door as a good potential foreign policy. Dr. Cohen explained federalism as ‘‘the system under which people are good neighbors but do not meddle." An example of a strong confederation were the five tribes o f Iroquois Indians that did^not squabble among them selves. ‘‘We must show our consi deration to all freedom-loving nations,” said Dr. Cohen.
