The latter is scientifically more marvelous, more hygienic, anti m ore comfortable. Yet persons do not go from all over the world j to see these structures as they go to Europe to see old cathedrals,! taverns, and castles. The hum an touch of time gives a building som ething that science cannot create. A worn step suggests more of ro m a n c e of life than a m arble s ta ir case. Science can furnish the physical com forts of life. but it cannot arouse sentim ent. the Science could do much to make some of the older buildings on ur campus more convenient and comtortabUs but in doing so it w o u ld d e s t r o y the individuality which endears them to everyone. Generations of students passing through these buildings have left a heritage which can never lie replaced. Few buildings are adm irable, but th ere is an intangible something about an oH building which neither science nor money can create.— Univ* r. fty Daily Kansan. DIGNITY GR POM POSITY? A n ew “ Five H in d red” is to be chosen by certain persons in New York w ho, of course, are capable of judging ju st who in th is country is fitted, by intellect and d ig n ity to be in th e sacred | circle. it One can scarcely call it a group, because th at smacks too much of the com m on crow d). Dignity, they say, is one of the essential requisite#; and? w ithout th at one is* in the phraseology of the common herd, “o u t' of hick” so fa r as the “Five H undred” is concerned. Somehow o r other this selection of the “ Five H undred” on the basis of dignity seems to have complications. Dignity has a double, whose nam e is Pomposity, and it is often quite serious when Pomposity is m ista k en for Dignity. But cdf course th e organizers of the “Five H undred” will | never get the tw o mixed, so why go on? T hey saw a toy grow into a tool — one ct the most useful in all history. On December ist, 1885 there was brought to G eorge W estinghouse, at Pittsburgh, an uncom m ercial “ second ary generator’’— a scientific toy. Wes tinghouse and associates lived w ith it day and night, and by D ecem ber 20, 1885, in a dash of genius, had com pleted the essential conceptions of the m odern transformer. T hus in twenty days they paved the way for alternat ing current, and the electrical era of the tw entieth century. H ere was a brilliant engineering feat — a feat that through the years has been a particular to a specialized group o f “ design engineers” inspiration w ithin the W estinghouse organization. These men are electrical and m echani cal engineers w ho are attracted not merely by an engineering problem — technical difficulties o f but by “ licking” that problem to narrow and the exact practical limits. These men w ork continuously w ith both sides of an equation. O n one side are the needs o f a customer. F or the other side must be developed apparatus w hich exactly meets those needs. T h e apparatus may range from a com plete system o f electrification for a railroad ♦ to a new type o f curling iron. E ngineering extends a w elcom ing hand to men qualified for designing. Many o f the most constructive services of W estinghouse have been made pos sible by their leadership. Westinghouse!
