Night Sports Editor Bernard B liste r J. F rank T olb e rt Sauce for the Goose A University ruling states that students shall not be allowed to hand in written reports after Dead W eek. Per haps the rule has been waived under unusual circum stances, but in the majority of cases the decree is followed with a merciless prescription. Another University ruling forbids the assignment of written reports which could not possibly be worked up be fore the beginning of Dead Week. In other words, papers are not to be assigned which would conflict with the stu dent purpose of Dead Week. We find that the second rule has been waived more often than the first one. And that it has worked as a con cession, we have yet to learn. Even a disregard of the first rule, believed to be a concession, works a hardship on the student. Freedom from restriction? Not exactly. Perhaps if the, student were allowed real freedom in all his courses, he would devise a schedule by w’hirh he could allocate his time to the various courses. But when there is a certain amount of alleged freedom in one class and none in the rest of them, then the student will naturally tend to leave the assignment with the open date until the last minute. So we would not only call the professor who assigns work which must come in after Dead Week an old meany. W e say that he is unjust. For we have alw ays heard that w h a t’s sauce for the goose is sauce tor the gander. Finals Require Conditioning Exam w eek — first night: Pot of coffee . . . three or four packs of cigarettes . . . a term ’s worth of n o t e s . . . someone e ls e ’s t e x t b o o k . an easy chair with a pillow in it . . . pajamas . . . an open .window. . . Result: “eramberry” sauce, headache, droopy eyelids, Sniffle in the morning. Second night: same. Third night: same. Fourth night: improbable. One of th e major evils of final exam s arises from an inability on the part of students to resist the temptation of endangering their health by putting o il review until the last night before finals* We all know the implied evils of this practice—that it defeats the purpose of the examination, etc. But that it endangers the health of the young man or wom an at the very time good health is most essential is a more important objection. The average student finds his hear in the re gion of his throat about the time the professor starts pass ing out the exam sheets. Ten minutes later his mind is in a muddle. Half an hour later he may ha v e recovered, but if he has staved up most of the night before, has loaded his lungs with nicotine, and saturated him self with coffee or stronger drink the possibility of his recovering after the half-hour are greatly lessened. Sore eyes, a head cold, sour stomach take about twenty points off the average final grade. And the dirty work of colds and other indications of poor health does not neces sarily begin with the day of the exam. With good health a better mental attitude is attained while studying; con centration is made possible, and the amount ot time neces sary for studying is lessened. If you have the “spring sniffles,” so popular arounc here a b o u t this time, see the University doctor now, beton* things get worse. Our educational system lays too much emphasis on these last few days to warrant a lapse into either mental or physical illness. Miss Dozier Wins i^,e\LongPRTvW8 V, . Ceaar Chest Attack on Farley ^, .
