Ewing H ight a t the pi ano, Jack Dunn playing the drums, the and Bill Mayfield wielding bass fiddle, obliged more than fifty spectators with new, old, soft, sweet, and jive selections. Chairs and stools surrounded the music makers, and less fo rtu n ate onlookers stood in the best vantage points available. Johnnie Abercia, Eddie Paggoli, and Billye Keith were resting th eir elbows on the piano to watch Ewing’s ver satile fingers as they gave out with arrangem ents of “ Embraceable You,” “ Down the Road Apiece,” “Rose and others. of San Antone,” The voices of Elmo Vestal, Buck Shaw, and J. D. Alexander were heard harmonizing w’hile the trio played “ You Are My Sunshine.” E leanor Webb, Dudley Kirby, B arbara Trambl, and Carl Rongo were jitterbugging to some of the fa ste r pieces. Jo W atkins kept Ewing, Jack, and Bill busy with requests. The rested with some boys slower tunes, including “ W hite C hrist mas,” “ Honey,” “ That Old Black In Your Magic,” “ Smoke Gets E yes,” “ Apple Blossom Time,” and “ Shanty In Old Shanty Town.” By 11:30 even Woody, the photographer, couldn’t resist the music-makers, and took pictures of the group, Ewing has been called by m any fans the “ Hoagy Carmichael of Texas U.” Although he has never had a music lesson, he can play alm ost any song requested. Newman Plans Christmas Party For Sunday Night Mistletoe and holly, painted windows, brightly-decorated man tels, and gay laughter will fill the Newman Club Sunday eve ning a t 8:30 o ’clock when mem bers g ather fo r a Christmas P a r ty. Making th e ir own en tertain ment, m em bers will dance to the tune of fav o rite records, chat by the fireside, o r play ping-pong in the arcade. Others will play bridge, Jac k Schuelke, s o c i a l chairman, announced. R efreshm ents come later, and B arbara O’B rien has promised food fie fo r the occasion, such as popcorn balls and coffee. The singing o f Christmas carols will complete th e program. Helen Brice, Jim K err, and Betty Jo K e rr announced th a t members would be charged 50 cents to cover cost of decorations and refreshm ents. They Make Christmas Gifts As Home Economics Project By WANDA ALLEN silver package, F or Christmas—a bright, gaily- wrapped and green ribbons, small box; inside, eight light grey cocktail napkins, beautiful linen m aterial, neatly hemmed, a saucy design—a tilted rose-colored cocktail glass, a man tails, his arm in thrown lovingly around the stem, bubbles d riftin g upward from the sparkling liquid — a small white label, “Handmade by Dorothy Da vis.” top h a t and Dot has made and sold six sets and has orders fo r fo u r more. Girls in Andrews Dormitory, where she lives, are buying them fo r Christmas gifts. A senior interio r decoration is m ajor fo r Stephenville, Dot the home e c o n o m i c s taking the in course, Creative C rafts the Home. A few weeks back class of seven members was taught the a rt of originating and stenciling designs on cloth. Tablecloths, napkins, luncheon sets, and other similar articles were made as the result of these instructions. Most of the handi work of the students will even tually end up in their hope chests or be given to mothers, sisters, or friends. The design on th e cocktail napkins Dot is making is a crea tion o f Jo Ann C arraw ay’s. She originated the design in one of the lab projects. * O ther useful articles fo r the home were designed an d made by members of the class. One o f the most unusual was a conventional design placed on a long table scarf. A string of monkeys (green ones, a t that) under a row of palm trees lines the border a t each end. The only boy in the class, Harold Richards, was the originator. A part-tim e employe of Beal’s interior decoration shop, Harold is studying and working until the tim e he can set up his own furni tu re business. Some of the girls rep o rt th a t during the three-hour lab Harold goes o u t fo r coffee three times. “ I t’s so monotonous,’* he com plains, “ being the only man, su r rounded constantly by girls and more girls. Coffee the situation somewhat.” relieves linen A nother member of the class, Davena Heath, p u t in each cor ner of a pink luncheon cloth a design of pale yellow wa te r lilies. ★ An Indian bird design—large, bold, and dram atic — on blue heavy crash m aterial was made by Idalee Golding for ft wall- hanging to be given to her motli er fo r use in th eir summer cabin in New Mexico. K atherine Steinhoff, whose husband, Keith, is a student hi the College of Business Adminis tration, made a yellow linen table cloth. The couple live in a hut* ment, and K atherine had quite a bit of trouble folding up her reg table cloth to fit the u l a r i z e “I’ll small dining room make one th a t’ll fit,” she decided, and the course offered the per fect opportunity. table. Dot Davis’s project was a aft of eight place m ats and napkins w ith a naturalistic clover blossom linen. Dot was design on beige offered $15 fo r the set by a wom an in Stephenville. The course is taught by Miss Anna Brightman. It is one of those rare no-lecture, no-quis, no final courses offered by the Uni versity. There are two three-hour labs a week, and, believe it or net, almost no absences. Besides the class stenciling, studied and did projects in batik dyeing, executing color designs by covering with wax the parts of the fabric or m aterial not to be dyed. They also took up other methods of decorating fabrics, I such as spray work. Usually about twenty children come to the party, where they receive ice cream and cook ies and a present from old Santa himself. Having a lot of fun, too, is Frank Abraham, president of Sigma Alpha Epsilon, standing to the left of O ld Saint Nick. This year the party will be given December 18. Women's PT Will Have Joint Classes Mass activity classes will take the place of regularly-scheduled sports in the Women’s Gym Wed nesday, Thursday, and Friday. Every y ear ju st before Christ the small mas, the men escort boys and girls from the home, located across the stree t a t 510 W est Twenty-sixth Street, to the fratern ity house. This year the party will be held Wednesday night, December 18. “ I t ’s fun fo r the guys,” said an SAE. He gets a big kick out of buying gifts and helping with the party. A big tree is decorated and a brightly wrapped gift fo r each child is placed under it. Not to overlook any details, a real, live Santa Claus is on hand to distribute the gifts. Heaps of ice cream and lots of cake and candy are served. “ The children eat all they can hold,” said a nun from the home. The children, dressed in their Sunday best, a t first stare a t the tree, and gifts, but the am azem ent and reserve wears o ff and soon they are playing with the toys— as arc? the nosts. Last year, the SAE’s en ter tained thirty-five underprivileged children from the home. All the children who are old enough go to the party. The oldest children a t the home are five years. Although too young to remember the parties from year to year, they always look forw ard excitedly to the big day a fte r h arin g been told of the invitation. Santa Claus was played by Bill Roberts last year. A fter Santa gave out the presents, the men had fun showing the guests how to j make the toys work. They also sang Christmas carols. Before the I party was over, several of the chil dren were being carried piggy back. Sigma Alpha Epsilon m em bers! agree th at the children from the home are “a swell bunch of kids. ’ The Magic Club will m eet Sun day afternoon a t 2:30 o’clock in exas Union. At this m eeting plans will be made fo r a show the club will give in February. Mexico Began Yule Tradition O f Poinsettas Most Americans, closely asso the brilliant Vermillion ciating poinsettia with Christmas, do not realize it is a comparative new comer to the Christmas scene. Or th a t the poinsettia is a complete ly A m erican contribution to Yule tide decoration. I t was in the old gardens of the Charleston, S. C., home of Dr. Jo e l Roberts Poinsett, th a t the p la n t first flourished u nd er A merican skies. Dr. Po in sett had brought this wild Mexican beauty back from Mexico, where he spent fo u r years as the A m erican am bassador. The tran sp lantin g was success ful in the mild Charleston climate and soon neighbors of Dr. Poin se tt were asking fo r shoots. Since the height of the p la n t’s beauty was reached a t Christmas, it seemed n a tu ra l to combine the scarlet with greens a n d use it fo r holiday decoration. T hus the capable, beauty-loving statesm an and bo tanist brought the flow er th a t was named fo r him into our traditions. Besides the decorative uses of the plant, the Mexicans have an old legend which explains why the poinsettia has a special sig nificance as the most-appreciated Christmas gift. A dark-eyed child sat with tear- filled eyes. In the early m orning she had knelt in the dim cathedral and sighed th a t she had not a sin gle flow er f o r the baby Christ nor money to buy one. Suddenly a peace came over her an d she saw a beautiful asked, “ Why a re you sad? Peace and good will should fill the land.” angel who T he child told of her sorrow, and the angel told h er to pluck the weed by roadside and the place it on the altar. “ Oh,” said th e child, “ I cannot place a weed am ong the beautiful flowers a t the a lta r .” The vision said, “ F e a r not to make yo ur o f fe rin g ; God looks beyond into the h e a rt.” The angel disappeared and the child obediently w ent to where the baby Christ lay and placed her p la n t in the m idst of the gor geous tropical blooms. She bent her head and whispered her p ra y er. Then her eyes beheld not the green weed with its yellow b er ries, b u t a vivid scarlet whorl, and h e r flower was as a crown of glory a t the holy shrine.
