P Jlie J P A u diological ^drdpect Economic weather prophets, an article in the January Harper’s Magazine says, ir re “remarkably unanimous” in predict ing that (I) an economic down-tum can be expected in*early 1954, (2) that it will range in depth between 5 and 8 per cent under the 1953 level of business activity, and (3) that the Administration will act —“fast and decisively”—to keep the re cession from going any farther. The story says that the Eisenhower administration has built up a staff of economic boards and planners “more ela borate than anything the New Deal ever had,” and apparently the Administration will swing into action at the next indica tion of any kind of recession. One part of the anti-depression pro gram which must not be overlooked is the psychological aspect. The most ela borate machinery in the world cannot stop a recession if the public decides one is coming. Then purse strings are pulled, investment slows down, employment eases, production slows, consumption declines, and depression is on the way. But if the people knew just what is coming, they might prepare themselves to accept it without panicking. The President should take to the air waves and television channels, again and again, as often as necessary, to explain just what is in store this year and exactly what he is prepared to do about it. Then people and administration could work to gether to prevent any serious setback. rL o opera on a t o C u i t After more than a month of discussion and work, the two student Democratic Party organizations on the campus have succeeded in ironing out their differences at least enough to pool memberships and elect a bipartisan slate of officers and executive committee. The new unified group represents a considerable conces sion from both of the old groups, and both are to be congratulated for their level headedness and spirit of co-operation. Now there can be no question of who i* legal and who deserves recognition from the state and national organizations. Also, there can no longer be any reason for a lack of unified, aggressive program in this election year. Perhaps now Democrats and Republicans can revive active com petition and awaken the campus to what’s going on in national politics. He was part of a team assigned to im prove recovery of adipic acid, a nylon in te r m e d ia te , from p la n t-w a ste streams. First, he made a literature survey for possible leads. Three recovery methods came under consideration: solvent extraction, crystallization, and a com lunation distillation-crystalluu - Hon process. H e helped to set up a laboratory program to compare and evaluate them. Prelim!Bary results were somewhat inconclusive, it was decided to go ahead with semi w orks testa, while organic chemist completed the laboratory work. N ex t. the young chemical engineer joined forces with a mechanical engi neer to design a semi-works plant to evaluate each method. In this plant, all vital fxiints were cheeked and re checked; materials o f construction, steam and w ater requirements, heat- transfer coefficients, yields, product quality, and pollution problems. T he semi-works data revealed that the dist Hint ion~crystallizat ion process was the most economical, and also gave the Ix st product quality. The story says that the Eisenhower adm inistration has built up a staff of economic boards and planners “more ela borate than anything the New Deal ever had,” and apparently the Administration will swing into action at the next indica tion of any kind of recession. One part of the anti-depression pro gram which must not be overlooked is the psychological aspect. The most ela borate machinery the world cannot in stop a recession if the public decides one is coming. Then purse strings are pulled, investment slows down, employment eases, production slows, consumption declines, and depression is on the way. But if the is coming, they people knew just what might prepare it to accept without panicking. themselves The President should take to the air One Point of View waves and television channels, again and again, as often as necessary, to explain just w hat is in store this year and exactly what he is prepared to do about it. Then people and adm inistration could work to gether to prevent any serious setback. Yo-oneration A fter more than a month of discussion and work, the two student Democratic P arty organizations on the campus have succeeded in ironing out their differences at least enough to pool memberships and elect a bipartisan slate of officers and executive committee. The new unified group represents a considerable conces sion from both of the old groups, and both are to be congratulated for their level headedness and spirit of co-operation. Nowr there can be no question of who is legal and who deserves recognition from the state and national organizations. Also, there can no longer be any reason for a lack of unified, aggressive program in this election year. Perhaps now Democrats and Republicans can revive active com petition and awaken the campus to w hat’s going on in national politics.
