We want you to know we genuinely appreciate the whole-hearted support and we hereby solicit more of the same. Like you, we’ve been saddened by Coach (Blair) Cherry's announcement that this will be his last season at Texas. Now. we are more determined than ever to win that championship for you and for him. lf you rally around us in each of the four remaining assignments as you did last week, we pledge we will not let you down. Gratefully. The University of Texas Football Team RICHARD ROWAN. Co-captain BUBBA SHANDS, Co-captain OPEN' LETTER TO TH E STU DEN T BODY: Receiving a message from your toot* ball team in this manner may be out of the ordinary, but then something e x tra ordinary prompted this action. Everyone knows Texas chipped SMU through determination and shrewd strategy, but not enough of them know about the other factors that contri buted to a terrific will to win. The mem bers of the team know, however, that lots of the credit for the fine victory rightfully belongs to the student body that rose to the occasion with the finest demonstration of spirit and loyalty tha* e \e r possessed a team s supporters Your pre-game rallies parades and other support contributed more than words can express. Certainly the SMU By C H A R L I E FINANCIAL Mc n u fu cJ J O A W EA K ER MAN would have quit long ago. But you can’t call Blair Cherry a weak man. No one ta n call a man weak, who, after a 14-13 loss to OU, could lead a team to a 23-20 victory over the nation’s top team, not to mention a 35-7 victory over Rice. Cherry says he is resigning because of personal reasons. He doesn’t state these reasons. The Texan feels that the undue c riti cism hurled at Cherry following the OU game has a lot to do with his resigning. And we can hardly blame him. Some drug store quarterbacks re played the game for days, and thee won it. Should UT loose one of the top coaches in the nation just because of one loss, and a non-conference one at that? It s well known that Blair Cherry has one of the most outstanding coaching records in the nation. It’s also well known that a coaching job at Texas can be one of the toughest in the world, be cause of unappreciative fans. In a letter to the student body, the football team praises students for fine support at the SMU game. They pledge to win the rest of their games for Cherry and for the student body. IF the sup port of the students is continued. I he I exan believes that showing support to the team isn t enough. We ought to show special support for ( ’berry. We should show him that WE the student body, think he’s the hest. Me should show him that WE want him to stay, regardless of outside pressure, How about a special c a l I v — for Blair Cherry, Washington Dean Pulls O ut Over Greek Rumpus Result By C A R O L Y N BUS CH Dr. E d w a r d H L a u e r, dea n o f student.* o f the U n iv er si t y o f Wa sh in gt o n , has “ picked u p hi * ma r b l e s a n d gone h o m e . ’' His r e s i g n a t i o n f r o m t he college staff was the c u l m i n a t i o n of a c o n t r o v e r s y in which t h e I n t e r - F r a t e r n i t y Council, t h e pr esident o f the u n i v e r sit y, a n d the f a c u l t y disci pline c o m m i t t e e r e j e c te d his r e c o m m e n d a t i o n f or p u n i s h m e n t o f Phi G a m m a Delta F r a t e r n i t y f o r i t s invasion a n d v andalis m o f t h e K a pp a K a p p a G a m m a S o r o r i t y house.
