EDITORIALS AMERICAN EDUCATION study will serve only as a sup plem entary aid to experience. seem A nother seemingly errone ous belief which is given a g re a t deal of attention by crit ics is th a t American education kills individuality, producing, thereby, “rubber-stam ped ’ in dividuals, molded a tte r the same pattern. Critics in this connection would to think th a t definite ideas, firm beliefs, wide knowledge and g reat intellect come from m ere i existence a t a university. On i the other hand, is not college ! nie r e ly an intellectual b a r te r in which sellers are as essen tial as buyers? Can any edu cational system do more than m erely take the individual p re sented and develop the given make-up? W h at there is, the college can develop; w h a t is lacking lost— fo r a new make-up cannot be given by any sort of education. Youth is neither innately cynical or hopeless, and it takes a great deal of life to stifle his natu ral te n optimism and his dencies. is 1111$ . * * * t,c to hid To the two * * * innate . . . . . . *- - iiiiiniiHitoWWi!WBnrimTtw*r attitude of ( C o r n e l l D a l l y S u n ) K I L L I N G T W O B I R D S v e students camp Iii the fifty d o l l a r fcu.Uon increase the] goes out into lite. The human being in clines toward extremes in all things— so the old think the col lege students are all mad, and the young think the old are itll mad— and no on** gives the other credit with "doing the thing as he sees it” without at least ac- announced through the president, to casing him of “not seeing Un* effective rn the colleges of arts things as they are.’ For that j . i science , architecture an d erigi- m atter, there is no proof th at ne ©ring in the fall of 1924, the only any one has as yet recognized feasible method of controlling the the real place anti value of cd ucation in America. Certainly, fo r instance, the Continental and American ideas of educa tion are at variance. the Continental an education means a chance to make his c hoice at his leisure of a world of knowl edge— to delve deeply or to skim lightly over as his fancy chooses, To him an education is not the means to worldly ad vancement—to make a practical use of it is not as a general rule a p art of his scheme of life. The American endeavors to gain ed ucation because education is the sesame to worldly advancement. The general trend of higher ed ucation in America, in short, if* to secure the sort of knowledge that leads to the profitable cul tivation of the American dollar. is not The American student seeking the sort of knowledge which will enable him to enjoy money any more than he is seek ing money that he may be let! free to enjoy knowledge. With him money’s meant is merely to gain money’s ends. * But, on the other hand, why do critics insist on com paring Continental and American ed ucational Obviously ideas? conditions are different. A m er ican education need not even be given such strenuous exam i nation— at least in this direc tion — for American education m eans so much more an d has such a broader scope, really, th a n has the Continental edu cation. The American student, in addition to learning “books," learns in college, a n d on leaving college he does n ot worry about the impending ’contact with the world— he has h a d in college. E x-President William Howard T a f t is reported to have said t h a t if his son, at the term ina tion of his college career, could g reet by their first names five h un d red classmates, he would consider his son’s four years’ sojourn a t Yale a complete success. In other words, asso ciation with other men is inevi ta b le for any individual, and to learn how to learn how to liv e in the th e group, Ex-President T a ft a r g ues is by no means a small p a r t of a college education O f course, th e study of soc lo 1- y and psychology, in- nee, helps one in thus direc either ■vte of r e g is tr a tio n in these colleges J o re se n ts itself.
