What were the issues? At; best, only two, and neither of them clear-cut. Only a handful of candidates actually took a stand a g a i n s t the Hare preferen tial system; only a few said anything definite about NS A. The issues— as usual, as traditional, as dismally as ever— were personali ties. A sad ratio of one out of five students voted. What w a s the result ? Thirteen ct the sixteen Clique can didates were elected; five sorority girls were elected; and seven independent men were elected. The Greek-Indepen dent r a tio : 19 to 7. To one extent, it serves the inde pendents quite right. They were— as a group, if not as individual candidates— lazy and disorganized. Such indiffer ence does not merit much reward. Neither does the fact that the inde pendents trailed condemn the Hare system, in itself; only 15 independents ran. whereas 24 Greeks were in con tention. It is the actual mechanics of the system which allow allocation of votes to be controlling. That is the discredit ing factor. Before the election, some Clique men were tacking up sheets on the bulletin boards reading: “ Vote this w ay!” And the rest of the sheets specified how it would be best if that particular fraternity placed its 1-2-3 votes. The system paid off. Are the Greeks n C*uer O n w a r d The quest for knowledge goes ever onward. Up at Harvard, date sitters solve a long-standing problem for all men who like to have feminine companion ship while they're hitting the books. A stodgy regulation forbade H ar vard students to allow’ girls in their rooms after 8 in the evening unless accompanied by another girl. Now7, the Harvard men can burn the midnight oil till midnight— and have the moral support of their lady friends all the w’hile. They just get an extra girl to come along and keep things on the up-and-up. The only thing required by the sit ters— besides financial remuneration — is that the couples with w’hom they sit furnish sufficient lighting for studying. a lilie s CHARLEY T R IM BL E Perhaps the Assembly, in fair-mind edness, will fully investigate the elec tion system and change it to a strict m ajority place system. The indepen dents would .still lose— they just don’t vote in the fall; but the system would be fair to each individual. ★ ★ In a copyrighted story Wednesday, the Boston Globe said that Dr. Ralph Bunche, United States Palestine Media tor and Nobel Prize winner, has been chosen professor of government at H ar vard University. Grandson of a slave, Dr. Bunche is the first Negro to hold a Harvard Col lege professorship. A Harvard grad uate, he is now’ senior director of the United Nations Trusteeship Council. Yet, there are those w’ho would give tho general public the right to see the gam es at student prices. In a recent editorial the Yale News s a id : “ The California student council has inaugurated a drive to supplement fac ulty gifts . . . We applaud the student movement . . . “ And because we feel th at the fight for academic freedom at California is no less contingent to Yale men because the battleground is a continent’s width away, w’e urge every member of the Yale family who believes in the dignity of the scholar and in the principles of freedom of thought to implement his feelings. “ If sent to the News, letters and con tributions will be forwarded . . . The Texan, which mailed 1,537 stu dent names attached to petitions back ing up the profs Saturday, hopes other universities than Yale will make simi lar demonstrations. ‘Issues’ Pleases Painter B y RONNIE DUGGER Now that the crass politics is over, some of the electees probably think they have done their duty to the stu dent body by getting elected. Put Lloyd Hand and Sterling Steves, who are fired up, ready to fight for student improvements like an honor system, deserve full and critical As sembly support. The Texan may have to cover a lot more Assembly meetings at which the Assemblymen sit on their hands and let George do it. We hope not. ABLE. and that any fennageling will be dealt with se v erely. First you must make a basic decision: Should the blanket tax be used by non-students? As all students are now re quired to pay the activity fee , there would be little point in making it transferable— IF you hold that only students should have the reduced price privilege. On the other hand, if you decide a student should be able to lend his blanket tax to non-students, you a u tom a tically force its convertibility.
