As every child knows, it is not “ d a iry in the dell” but “ fa rm e r in the dell” , in which case the s k irt should be called not dirn dl but firndl. Some of them just check instead a n d ^heir ^ * lots are automatically voided. Others vote numerically without realizing that the way the ballots are counted makes their choice of numbers vitally important. What can be done? First and foremost, invalidate all ballots on which less than the total number of Assemblymen from a certain school have been marked. Then, ditch the complicated Dalby system en tirely and get a simple, fair, workable system. Vote on the number of people that can be elected without marking pref erences and take those with the highest count. Or have a preferential system, but a simplified one. Either way, the candi dates with the largest backing will be able always to win. The new Assemblymen are fresh out of combatting the unfairness of an outdated. never - satisfactory vote - counting sham. They know the drawbacks and political loopholes involved. They have the oppor tunity of drawing up a good enough new system to be approved by the student body in the spring election and initiated in the 1955 fall election. C^arS an J ~Strities Suggestion to the traffic department: If a stripe were painted down the nar row campus portion of Twenty-fourth Street, drivers would have an easier job estimating distances and passing each other. far too many years. Everybody complains about it, anybody who has dealt in politics curses it, vote- counters scream about it, but nobody has succeeded in doing anything about it. So, in this last election, Assembly candidates had to fight it again, and a lot of them felt cheated. They probably weri. The Dalby system, with its preferential order of voting, has become political child’s play for the old pros on campus. They’ve learned to vote Number One for their candidate and leave the rest of the ballot unchecked. That way, they give no second or third place vote to opponents and their candidate has a better chance to pull through in the second or third count, That little trick has gotten to be old stuff on the University campus. All groups don’t indulge, true. But enough of them do to make elections a farce. As long as there is a Dalby system, elections will continue to be farcical. Then there’s the added thorn that some candidates—and this occurred in the last election— have more votes than the win ners but don’t get into office at all. Candidates for political offices don't go into an election; if s more like a game of roulette. I f s not as much a matter of who gets the most votes as of how' the ball bounces. Everybody complains about it, anybody who has dealt in politics curses it, vote- counters scream about it, but nobody has succeeded in doing anything about it. So, in this last election, Assem bly candidates had to fight it again, and a lot of them felt cheated. T hey probably wer$. The Dalby system , with its preferential order of voting, has become political child’s play for the old pros on campus. T hey’ve learned to vote Number One for their candidate and leave the rest of the ballot unchecked. That way, they give no second or third place vote to opponents and their candidate has a better chance to pull through in the second or third count. That little trick has gotten to be old stuff on the University campus. All groups don’t indulge, true. But enough of them do to make elections a farce. As long as there is a Dalby system , elections will continue to be farcical. Then there’s the added thorn that some candidates— and this occurred in the last election— have more votes than the win ners but don’t get into office at all. Candidates for political offices don’t go into an election; it’s more like a gam e of roulette. It’s not as much a m atter of who gets the most votes as of how the bali bounces. This is elections at The University of Texas. staggering number of them, at th at— don't even understand the preferential system . Some of them just check instead of numbering their choices, and their bal lots are autom atically voided. Others vote numerically without realizing the w ay the ballots are counted makes their choice of numbers vitally important. that What can be done? First and foremost, invalidate all ballots on which less than the total number of Assemblymen from a certain school have been marked. Then, ditch the com plicated Dalby system en tirely and get a simple, fair, workable system . Vote on the number of people that can be elected without marking pref erences and take those with the highest count. Or have a preferential system , but a simplified one. Either way, the candi dates with the largest backing will be able always to win. The new Assem blymen are fresh out of com batting the unfairness of an outdated, never - satisfactory vote - counting sham. They know th e drawbacks and political loopholes involved. They have the oppor tunity of drawing up a good enough new system to be approved by the student body in the spring election and initiated in the 1955 fall election. ars a n J S ) tr ip e S Suggestion to the traffic department: If a stripe were painted down the nar row campus portion of Twenty-fourth Street, drivers would have an easier job estim ating distances and passing each other.
