Theo. Bellmont, dean of the college. The University strives to keep abreast of the times, and the new college is in keeping with the policy of the school. Every first-class high school in Texas lakes prijtie in its athletic teams and good coaches, men who are thorough in tneir knowledge of sports and are qualified to lead boys, are in demand. In fact, a University graduate can make more money as an athletic coach in one of our larger high schools than he can at first in business or in a profession. A high school coach has a great Influence over the students in his school—perhaps a greater influence than does a college coach. High schools need men of character and integrity, who place clean sportsmanship above victory, to lead their teams. High schools also need men who know every phase of the differ ent sports. The now college teaches football, basket ball, track baseball, and other sports. Students are taught every department of the games and also receive actual practice in the sports. In addition, the requirements for a degree from the new college are very simi lar to the requirements for a Bachelor of A rts degree. Joe Ward, Aile Curtis, Rube Leissner, Howard Gilstrap, and Bobby Robertson are a few' of the former University students who b o w are coaching in Texas high schools and prep schools, and are having splendid success. These students took courses that are now given in the new' college. The new College of Physical Activities will enable its grad uates to earn lucrative salaries, and more important than this, it will afford our high schools an opportunity to secure coaches of to high! the highest type. The results will he very beneficial school athletics and also to college athletics, as our universities must secure their athletes from the smaller institutions. TURTLES AND TURTLETTES SWIM FROM SEPTEM BER TO MAY The Turtle Club, made up of University girls who are inter ested in acquatic activities, had its first meeting last night in the pool of the University Y. M. C. A. Girls who meet the member ship requirements become Turtles, and the others will be known as Turtlettes. Next May the girls with the highest score will be awarded a gold, silver, and bronze turtle, respectively. Girls sure!;* have it on the boys, We boys never have been very crazy about the water and especially in the winter time. But our feminine friends, who arc mon* delicate anil less vigorous, have the pluck to swim in an icy pool of water every month dur ing the winter. A turtle, protected by a thick, brown plate over his back, or even a hard-shell ground turtle, never had more courage than the members of the Turtle Club at the University. It is as strenuous as football as fascinating as baseball, as fast as basket batt, and ES interesting as tennis. All members of the fair sex who have aspirations to become second Annette Kellermans or anv of the other Daughters of Neptune should indulge in this superb form of physical exercise. Swimming is one of the best exercises.
