Tho methods of social reform are sometimes surpris in g . Tile hi uh birth rate iii many countries Is causing a serious problem. Yet attempts to educate people on birth control methods is an uphill movement. A rather crude idea instituted in India- where the population is now more than SKM) million and rising by 12 million a year- -is gaining followers. For some time, India has had a voluntary* program urging men who have three children to consider steriliza tion as a means of control. Recently, the Ministers announced the idea of a pro ject of compulsory sterilization after three children and the offering of a transistor radio to eveiy man accepting the present voluntary' scheme. Some contend that the simple “bribe” may be more successful than any amount of education in this problem. For one thing, there is the fa d of tile teonomic straits many of these large families find themselves in. Tile intro duction of consumer goods gives them something to shoot for, so to speak. It’s a general feeling that by receiving one such pro duct, these people will begin to realize that small fam ilies may make them more able to afford new goods and “luxuries.” The method does Indeed seem crude. P E R IIV P S the most outstand ing scene in the show was the song “ Never Say No’’ by the old fathers, Huckaby (Rankin Glover) and Bellam y (G arry Moore). They were irresistably funny, and set the pace throughout the show. Above all. they had tremendous the audience was spirit, and I caught up in their fun, Janie Bran as 16 year-old Luisa I was totally convincing from the moment she walked on stage. “ I'm special!” she said In one of her opening lines, and indeed she was. Her facial expressions alone saved some of the slow* s' scenes lira voice Is light and lilting. Occasionally, it had a breathy quality, but it was entirely ac ceptable in this youthful p art Her Luisa was bubbling and full I of the excitement of life and be ing in love. JOHN NO W LIN as Matt was just a bit too young fra his 20 years. His voice is very pleasant “ You Are in songs such as larks necessary Love,” but volume for the louder numbers and when he strains for sound, pitch suffers it Matt and Luisa pulled tin* sec ond act out of its semi-doldrums as even the fa tilers songs eould- ! n’t manage in their last two num bers They were touching as the levers happily reunited. young and not one member of the audi ence was seen to move during the singing of the lovely “ They Wers You.” It was undoubtedly John Nowlin’s best song. David J arret as E l Gallo, the bandit, was more than capable. His style was just sweeping and melodramatic enough. Unfortun ately, he was hampered with a pitch problem during most of his songs, but the Flaunting beauty of ‘T r y To Rem em ber," which opens and closes the show, res cued him. Drapite pitch discrep ancies, tho sung is a winner. P E R R A IS tile t>est performance of the evening was given by Alex M arshall as the mute. His mime was outstanding — every gesture and expression functional and graceful. When he was budding the imaginary wall in the second act, one could visualize it rising stone by stone. Woody Reagan is not to be overlooked as the accompanist. He contributed much to th:* p-r ii >rmanee.
