F o r th e first time in its history, the student paper wil tra n s fe r its energies to foreign soil; for the first tim e the inter ests of V arsity will receive at boost from the outside and the same time from its own or gan. LOMAX. th e W ith an humble apology lor the few weeks’ delay, The Daily Texan wishes to make a s ta te ment concerning tru est friend a college paj>er ever had, John A. Lomax, who has leit the University of Texas a fte r a con nection which has existed w ith few exceptions for more th a n tw enty years. While he was with us we enjoyed his co-opera tion and assistance, but did not necessary— had we deem tho ug ht of th a n k h i m ; it— to but, since he has left, we miss his crisp humor, his good-na tured smile, and above all, his any issue willingness to help editor who happened to be in hard s tra its for copy. it To tell why Mr. Lomax is gone is to go into details con cerning th e U niversity dispute w ith an ex-Governor, and we are determ ined to avoid th e unpleas a n tn ess of such a dissertation. But he is w ith us no longer. A prom inent banking firm in Chi cago is now his m aster, and we v en ture to a sse rt t h a t they never had a more willing, a more an x ious w orker on th e ir s ta ff. We know Mr. Lomax well enough fo r th a t. Tim e will come when Mr. Lo m ax will r e tu r n to th e llniver- sity of Texas. A man who has mmortalized traditions in Tex as deserves no such tre a tm e n t as was accorded the a u th o r of “Cowboy Songs’' by w h at once was th e Board of Regents of our institution. Recompense came too late when an urgent invita the form er tion was extended secretary of the faculties to re turn, and Mr. Lomax declined because of obligations to his em ployers. But, as we said before, some day th e same old room filled with the same old relics and the same old Texas welcome will harbor the same old John A. Lomax And th e same smile followed by the identical laugh which has re v e n e r a te d betwixt four walls thousands of tim es invite you in and almost force you to make yourself at home for a few minutes. the A SMALL COMPLAINT. the Concerning antedeluve- nated idea of fighting by means of huge and horrible words in editorial comment, The Texan has its opinion, and this opinion is nothing if not unfavorable. Our prologue precedes; full ju s tification of the scrap, which we are seemingly about to pick, fol lows. The Austin American of Sun- lay printed a page of University news, well w ritten and well a r ranged, which added much to the interest of students in th a t p a r ticular newspaper. But there was an objection, som ew hat del icate in nature, which should be It was the head over the made. fra te rn ity announcing story pledges, which read, “ Kind S tu dents Try to Save Freshm en from B arbarians." is misleading in The head It te rm s non many respects. “B arbarians," fra te rn ity men the word w ithout mentioning Greek, which would in itself be ample explanation of why non w earers of a badge have assumed •i “barb a ric " name. The o th e r objection The Tex an finds with the head is th a t it a tte m p ts to convey th e idea th a t securing a pledge is comparable to a salvation from a “ Hades on a rth ," and th a t the fra te rn ity is doing a charitable a c t— some- hing kind— when it goes out and rescues one seemingly about o perish in the depths of anti- Greekdom. Misconceptions are bound to ollow from the idea hinted at in question. Life in th e head outside th e walls of a fra te rn ity house is ju s t as endurable, ju s t as pleasant at the U niversity as ife within. Pledging a man is not a “ kind" a c t; b a rbarism does not exist a t the U niversity as applicable in the common m ean ing of th e term , but as opposed th e word, Greek.
