Issue Editor for Today: L E W IS B. W ALKER. Vernon I.. Elledge. . A ssistant E ditor To every Texan worker, the sta ff meeting, which will be heldj in Room 111 this afternoon, is the most important gathering you can attend during the year. Such an efficient organization of workers was perfected last year th a t only one sta ff meet ing was necessary. m g cess of WO I k was exp aine detail by experts in the college tjon daily game; the fascination of reportorial duties, the responsi bilities resting upon the “cub’s” shoulders, the advantages of Texan activity were all pointed out clearly. The pro- j j ^ REALIZATION’S STING NEAK It is not legitimate the desire of The Texan to object to what hap pens to be what today because it is what, and it is not the p u r pose to throw a cloud filled with a chilling mist of sentiment around a student body seeming ly happy over their work and prospects, hut there is an objeo tion, in our eyes, which we think is timely, if not well put. It is this: if the peo ple— as represented in the Uni versity of Texas are aw are of the war, their behavior under thf consciousness of a national strain is really an insult to the reason th a t all flag. Southerners, and we speak with a quasi-knowledge of conditions throughout most of the Southern States, cannot be culprits, are not desirous of showing disrc spcct to the American Govern ment, we are forced to th e con clusion th a t th e realization of war has not penetrated into the average brain. For the The stre et cars run, people stack in picture shows, th e usual care-free Saturday laughing, evening crowd can still be found every week— in fact, everything is running in high as if the blowout of w ar had been for gotten because we knew th e p a r ticular casing had been weak for A suit of khaki a long time. is the only re now and then minder of w hat will be coming to America in a few days—the cas ualty lists, th a t dreadful carrier of grief-overcoming news. We forget to mention one thing, a supposed reminder of what we are now in—the sup er ficial fads prevalent among our own body of students. We need not point out the most evident; it is needless to say the effo rt expended is not combined with sufficient to give sentim ent champions much Uncle S am ’s material aid in the way of k n it ted garm ents. We do not cen sure the industry neeeded to fos ter the grow ing fad— how we hate to apply th is word in war tim e s !—but we do condemn the spirit which encompasses the wielders of the slim ivory sticks. A trip th rou gh Canada is con vincing and curing. Not a face can be seen th a t is not furrow ed by the awful anxiety of war. Here the women engage in the same work as our girls, but the fancy k n itting bag, the gaudily the “I-do nt- colored needles, facial know-who-it-is-for” ex all missing; the pression are lists of dead, wounded, and miss ing have been daily reminders of what w ar is, and it has changed com our N orthern neighbors pletely. A college editorial will h a rd ly reap results commensurate to th e needs of a nation, but oftentim es a conscience must be satisfied. W h at has happened to Canada is going to happen to us, and th e terrible tra n s fo rm a tion long withdraw n. A m ericans a re now in trenches, and it is n o th in g but logical to expect A m erican names am ong the lists t h a t soon m ust be ca- is not If you are absent this a f te r noon at 4, it is likely th a t you will pass up the only chance of meeting the entire staff at one lime. The personal acquaint ance of three-score willing w ork ers is no small asset in itself, md if for no other reason, you should he on hand with your hand ready for some few clasps. The method of passing from the ground floor to the heights of an issue editorship, the ag ent from a try o u t to a special olumn w riter, the rise from a Frosh routine man to "Ye E d ’s leak”—all of these thing s and more will be explained. Tryouts m ust be th ere if they hope to succeed in reserving a berth on th e s ta f f for th e com ing session. A roll will be taken, md absentees will continue on che reportorial end under handi cap. Be there. GREEN ( ARS ANI) THE ROOTING Si ETKIN. Believing the statem ent made by grandstander* (the ed hav- ng endured the sun of Satur- lay’s game with the rest of Var sity \s fans), there never was a better show ing of first-year men it a football game. Green caps dmost monopolized the heads of he east-side rooters— it seemed hut the Frosh had a little world >f their won. This world was where it be- onged. "A good Indian is a lead un,” and a good Frosh is a •ooting un. The mouth which is jften partially shaded by a green •ap must needs stay open— it is ;he nature of th e beast. And or what b e tte r purpose can a mouth remain open than encour- iging Longhorn athletics? The Freshmen were in their sphere, md the sphere was not mis- placed by the fates. SONS OF HERMAN” AWARDS FELLOWSHIPS AND SCHOLARSHIPS I don’t mind my room-mate wearing My collars and my shoes, And he may have my shirts and ties, And handkerchiefs profuse. My su b s are his if he wants them; My towels and my soap, But at my collar buttons, friend, Is where I draw the rope. Now, I woke up this morning late, He had already left; Of fiesh-pressed suit and collars clean I found myself bereft. With patient grind I donned the clothes Thai I wore yesterday, Then turned unto the dresser, where My collar buttons lay; Or ra th e r where I thought they lay, F o r they were not there then, And I was just a trifle peeved, To tell the truth, my friend. Of course I had a nine o’clock— ’Twas then eight fifty-two— Eight minutes, kid, in which to dress, Now- what wras I to do? I looked through all his dresser draw'- In hopes I’d find a pair, I rummaged through his dirty shirts, But not a one was there. I tied my collar down in front, That w art served well, indeed, To hold my collar down behind— It was a friend in need. But, as all day long my collar chafed, It loose and looser grew, And when I took my collar off, I took my w art off too. “ Roomie” is for arbitratio n— “The tongue before the fis t” — p u t wait until th a t boy gets home- I’m not a pacifist!
