Dr. B a ttle m aintains that Greek a rt is superior to present day art because o f the sk illfu l technique, clarity, zeal fo r p erfectio n , sense o f proportion, grace and charm, and refin em en t shown by Greek artists. Modern a rtists have the ten dency to try too hard fo r n ew ness in approach, and th ey fail in clarity. Greek art is not an easy sub je c t to study because there is not much in this country. The larg- e.st m useum s have gotten som e, but in the m ain it is necessary to de pend on pictures and casts. Much o f the art has been destroyed. For in stance, the R om ans stole much o f it and when barbarians overran the cou n try both Greek and Roman art w as underm ined. F ire has also d estroyed som e. The Steers w ill be seriously i two players handicapped, since have quit and several others have ! labs, but an impromptu line up i has been formed to tussle with the hard-hitting Fliers. Speedy Bob Dalzell, the Long- ; horns ace pitcher, is slated to start the hill, with Dave Ph illey on read y to take over in case he falters. B ig B o b has started four games and has been shelled every time, but has been pitching against tremendous opposition each time, and and hold the F liers down. is expected to do his part j M eanwhile the entire squad has been undergoing rigorous hitting practice, and have been showing up well. The main fau lt hereto fore has been neither the hitting nor the pitching, but miserable support in the field. F lo yd Bak er, w'ho won 14 games w hile losing only fou r last season, a record excelled in service teams o n ly by Sid Hudson, w ill take the mound against Texas. The big righthander w ill probably be the best pitcher the Steers w ill face this season. The starting outfield fo r Texas w ill probably be B illy “ R ooster" in Andrew s left, Captain Bob Campbell in center, and either Duke Belen or converted catcher P a u l M antle in right. The infield w ill remain the same w ith Cox on first, H unt on sec ond, Condor a t short, and Steph ens on third. Behind the plate w ill be Ja c k Avinger. Avinger, who got five hit* in aix attem pt! over the week-end aga mat Brooks Field and Randolph Field , seem* to have forced out Chris Hubbard from the catching •pot. This w ill he the first of three games against San Marcos this season, w ith the next to be played the first week in May. Tuesday under an unofficial nod of approval the W h ite from House, with Vice-President H en ry W allace again subbing for F.D .R . in tossing out the first bali. He allowed only 4 hits and 4 walks and struck out 6 men. The best-looking N avy team was the 1st Co., Andrews. They had a pitcher w ith a good fast hall who show* signs of developing into a fa ir hurler. The Kappa Sigma game was the best game of the day, but on the whole the N a vy teams looked a little better than the fra tern ity aggregations. N either Kappa S ig ma nor the 1 st Co,, Andrews, had much, and both w ill have to show s great deal o f improvement to do anything this season. On the whole, the games were rather slow and the playing sloppy, but the fact that these wrere the first games of the season must be remembered. ★ K irk Kessler looked pretty good pitching fo r the Alpha Tau Ome gas in a practice game, but Buck Bradley, who relieved him during the last two innings didn’t look so hot, and could well be shifted to the outfield. Sigma Nu, which won its sched uled game by forfeit, looked good in smashing the Chi Phis, but the Chi P h il w eren’t much opposition to judge by, though the Sigma Nus have a fa ir pitcher, who is a little wild, but fast. Two men batted 1.000 for the victorious Kappa Sigmas. They were pitcher Roy Cox and right- fielder Doug Stew art, another Longhorn basketball star. Stew art got a home run, a double, and two walks. The first is, “ I never forget a face, but ITI make an in your exception case,” and the second is “ When I came to this country, I didn’t have a nickel. Now I’ve g o t a nickel.” In recent times. Groucho has title. 'em with his roared two degrees Though he has from Harvard, Groucho always says, “I’m Dr. Marx, N.G. The N.G. means 'Never Gradu ated.’ ” While at a swank party in a movie, a lady of society said to Groucho, “ The Count will sit on my right hand and you will left hand at sit on ray the dinner.” To which he ques tioned. “ How will you eat, through a tube?” Our other all time favorites come from Jimmy Durante, whose best jokes also originat ed with a court room scene in which he is both the defend lawyer and the defend ant’s ant, As the defendant’s lawyer he yells, “ Durante, do you swear to tell the whole truth and nothing but tr u th ’” Then he sits down in the wit ness chair and answers, “ I do.” Then he stands up as the law- yer and moans, “ Then we re licked before we start!” the Jimmy’s best is where he tells about the fellow sleeping in the park when a swarm of flies light on his nose. The fellow wakes up and sees the flies, says “ Live and let live” and goes back to sleep. Then a bee comes along and the guy on the nose and the guy wakes up with a start. He glares at then swats them o ff his nose, saying “ There has to be a wise guy in that, every crowd. everybody o ff, everybody o ff.” We just thought you might like these oldies too.
