Abstract

This paper contributes to the emerging scholarship on Nicaraguan media studies and gender relations by examining the Nicaraguan social telenovela series Sexto Sentido. Using a cultural media studies perspective, I argue that the cultural weight of the telenovela genre has instigated social consciousness and challenged the traditional perceptions of women's roles in Nicaragua. The appropriation of the telenovela genre as is exemplified by Sexto Sentido, allows an open space for the discussion of women's issues and increases the opportunity to develop further media education strategies that both entertain and inform about social concerns.
