Description
This investigation reports osmotic behaviour of the mantis shrimp Squilla empusa and also ionic changes in body fluids and muscle as a function of salinity of the external medium. S. empusa commonly inhabits coastal seas and the muddy bottoms of shallow marine waters where the salinity is to a certain degree affected by fresh water drainage. In the Mississippi Delta Region S. empusa is common in the lower sound and Pro-Delta Slopes (Parker, 1956) where the salinity fluctuates from 25 to 34 parts per thousand (Curtis, 1960). Apparently, it has not been obtained below 25 parts per thousand sea water
