Abstract
This paper examines how the principles of sustainability may be applied to the field of landscape architecture. It gives a brief history of the Sustainable Sites Initiative and the guidelines and benchmarks developed by that organization to measure the long-term environmental and social impact of landscape design. The paper then goes on to discuss strategies for water management, use of vegetation, and site design for sustainable landscape architecture.
