Abstract

This thesis is an interdisciplinary discussion of growing religious extremism amongst the evangelical right and the resulting targeted persecution of practitioners of Matriz Africana religions in Brazil. I present the thoughts, feelings, and theories of interlocutors living in the state of Rio de Janeiro positioned on various sides of the conflict and outline the structures and mechanisms currently enforced by the Brazilian State which have greatly exacerbated the issue of religious violence in recent years. My analysis of primary and secondary sources, along with semi-structured interviews, revealed a rapidly deteriorating security situation for practitioners of Matriz Africana religions as the phenomenon of evangelical extremism spreads at an incalculable rate.
