A. S. Johnston High School, located in Austin, Texas, is one of many schools in the nation experiencing high drop-out rates, low graduation rates, and low achievement levels. Known as a minority school, Johnston High School is located in the far eastern part of the city, an area historically populated by Mexican American and African American citizens. The current situation of the school is discussed by examining the demographics, achievement levels and access students have to quality resources. A historical investigation into educational policy at Austin Independent School District sets the groundwork for the changes seen at Johnston High School since its opening in 1960. Through segregation, court-ordered desegregation, and the creation of neighborhood schools, Johnston has undergone changes in the quality of educational opportunities available to its students. The general trend seen at the school is one where quality educational access is highly positively correlated to the number of non-minority students attending the school. During periods of integration, forced or otherwise, improved educational opportunities for minority east Austin high school students became available. While majority-minority schools traditionally have the worst resources, teachers, and opportunities, this does not need to be the case at Johnston High School. With quality, experienced teachers, a more demanding and rigorous curriculum, and greater student expectations success can be realized for the students at Johnston High School
