Banned Books for Pride
Pride started as riot. The first Pride Month celebrations marked the 1969 Stonewall Riot in New York’s Greenwich Village, a protest against police brutality toward the LGBTQ+ community. Now, Pride is a global celebration, yet in 2021-22, the queer and trans communities faced challenges to their rights and well-being. Libraries are not immune to this trend. 2021 saw a barrage of book challenges in schools and public libraries, many focused on LGBTQ+ stories. In this display, we are proud to highlight stories that center LGBTQ+ experiences, but have been challenged in Texas. These are stories of finding oneself, healing , experiencing love, and protesting injustice. We hope you find something here or in the rest of the collection that connects you to the spirit of pride.
