Abstract

This thesis examines the 1959 Tex-Son garment workers strike in San Antonio, Texas. It discusses how the local press constructed a particular meaning of the strike through its daily coverage, and how the striking workers contested that meaning through the use of a boycott campaign that rearticulated gendered images of women as workers. Finally, there is a general overview of the strike that places the event in the context of Chicana/Mexicana working-class history
