dc.description.abstract | The occurrences of police brutality and the criminalization of blackness begins not with the first police force, but the culmination of the policing body; that being the empowerment of the white citizenry during the institution of slavery and its progeny throughout United States1 history and the protecting gained from it. Using Orlando Patterson s theory of slavery, one can see the continued relationship of blackness and whiteness and its production of subjugation, empowerment, tension and criminalization as such a relationship spans back to the beginning of institutionalized slavery. Such events exemplify that time is not a line; it is a cycle that continues to show its pattern whether we notice it or not. | en_US |
